Default www.oilcareers.com - legit?

Hey All,

I am an unemployed engineer looking for work (and to throw in a pitch for me - I love to work hard, and have reference letters from my past employers if you wish to send me a pm ), and came across this site. After filling out my online CV, they offer for 18 euros to give free access to my CV to any employer who wishes to see it.

I googled them and can't find any news on them, and there site seems legit, but has anyone heard of them before? It isn't the money I am worried about, more so giving my credit card info to a random.

Thanks for any tips!

Kavy

My radar is going off....
I think that job sites normally make most of their money off employers paying them to post jobs or pay them to look through their database (kind of like a recruiter, no?)

Seems a little hokey, but if it's the CC number you're worried about and want to take a chance on it, you could buy a prepaid visa so you're not giving your own card number out.

Personally, I'd be more worried about giving them personal information contained on a resume.

Just apply to online posting at individual companies.

Have you ever spoken to a recruiter? It is actually a pretty good way to look for a new job. They do all the running around and line up interviews for you. The best part, it is free for you!

I know of a lot of big oil companies that hire through recruiters.

If you go onto a website like monster.com (.ca) look up jobs that you want and more often than not you will find a recruiter's posting. Contact them and they will get you started.

I've come across a few of those site in the past. I think one was called whatoiljobs.com or something like that. Basically if you paid them, they would unlock the company and let you apply. It seems more popular in the US but there were some Calgary companies.

I ended up just googling the exact job title and it would usually link up to the actual company or recruiter- no need to pay.

There are plenty of boards out there that don't charge for employers to see your resume. Unless that board is posting exclusive roles ( I doubt it) it means that they're probably charging because they're not getting registration fees from employers.

In other words I would avoid it, its probably not populated enough to pay for.

What kind of engineer? Do you have your P. Eng? What type of work are you looking for?

You should never have to pay to apply for a job. Seems fishy.

Mechanical, and nope, only graduated in May 2010 so I have my E.I.T. I have done mostly construction in the past (including contract admin and coordination) but wouldn't mind moving to the client side of the oil sector (who wouldn't for the most part). I have had some interviews with some EPCM firms in town and that seems interesting as well.

Thanks for all the advice and comments all! I was actually going to just go ahead and do it, and a light bulb went off in my head to see what the members of CP thought, I am glad I waited!
