Flames Bill Arnold/John Gadreau - Early favorites for Hobey Baker Award?

2 Calgary Flames prospects are playing very well with BC in American college hockey.

BC had a ton of their older players graduating from last year's team; Cam Atkinson, Jimmy Hayes, Brian Gibbons, which opened a spot for their younger players.

Two in particular; John Gadreau and Bill Arnold were given top roles this year, which is shocking since York plays his veteran players over his younger ones. Both are Flames draftees.

Jerry York on Gadreau:

When speaking of Johnny's performance Saturday night and on the season Coach Jerry York said, "He is a really good player. He is learning to adjust to this level. He certainly has the skill to put points on the board, but he has some work to do on some other aspects of his game."
Putting points on the board has been exactly what Gaudreau has done. In four games for the Eagles this season, he has scored twice and assisted on four others.
Gaudreau said, "I have been placed on a line with great players. I play with Pat Mullane and Steven Whitney. They have taught me a lot and I'm still learning the game — the team I am on helps a lot as well."

What He Does: Jerry York and his assistants had an eye on Arnold since his freshman year at Noble and Greenough Prep in nearby Dedham, but only when he arrived at BC and the coaching staff saw him daily did they realize the impact he could make. York says Arnold has a great understanding of the game; that, coupled with his strength along the wall and on his skates, playmaking and shot-blocking ability, and defensive prowess, has him on track to become a breakout star for the Eagles. Twenty goals, says York, is a realistic projection.

While I haven't watched any games, it is good to keep note on both of these players this year. I was mainly checking in on Chris Kreider of the Rangers since I have been high on the kid, but I see two flames prospects who are playing just as well. Both can probably make the WJC roster, however I'm not sure if Arnold is eligible since he may be too old for the WJC.

Arnold attended the American WJ camp this summer...

So he is already being considered for it.

The big question Gaudreau will always have is his size. Everyone know he has skill and talent, but until he proves that he can handle NHL sized opposition, many will doubt his ability to play in the NHL.

His size will be a factor, but at least when playing college hockey, he has more time to grow. Also, right now he's playing against older possibly bigger men than he would be in junior.
