Default Update - Vancouver and Halifax win shipbuilding contracts

Sorry for starting another political thread, but is anyone following this?

The governement is about to announce the winner of 2 large ship building contracts:

- $25 billion for naval warships
- $8 billion for supply vessels and other non-combat craft

There are 3 bidders in the process:
- Vancouver
- Halifax
- Quebec

As one of the largest the largest military procurement in modern Canadian history, the government has been trying to keep this as transparent as possible but you know that the losing shipyard will be complaining. To be fair though, the ship yard that misses out is able to bid on a third smaller contract (2 Billion) that'll be tendered later.

In terms of transparency, the governement has hired indepedent monitors to ensure that it's a fair and unbias.

Harper's trying to avoid the f-18 furor when Mulroney awarded the engine contracts to Quebec even though Winnipeg was the recommended bid. Either way, I'm sure this is going to get political

Maybe I've been playing too much Mass Effect, or watching too much Sci-fi / Discovery Channel lately... but I came into the thread thinking this would be about space travel for some reason.

I really hope Halifax get this, it'll be a good shot in the arm to the Nova Scotian economy.

That said a friend of mine speculated that Halifax will get the bid, and to make up for it Ontario/Quebec will get the high speed rail. Then if Vancouver gets the maintenance contract it's win/win/win.

However, I guess we'll know in about 5 minutes or so

I was out in Halifax a few weeks ago and the amount of excitement around the entire city related to this bid was obvious.

As such, I hope they get it!

The other thing to know is that one company cannot win both bids and only Vancouver and Halifax are in on the military bid.

If I recall correctly from somewhere else, Halifax is really the only facility that can do the large contract for warships. The BC port is more suited for the smaller contract. With Quebec, they are kind of a wild card as they were the last to submit their bid and some seem to think they'll get it just because it's Quebec

A shipyard cannot win both projects. The shipyard that walks away empty-handed Wednesday will still be eligible to bid on further contracts worth $2 billion in total to build smaller ships. The two successful shipyards will not be eligible to bid on that work.

pretty much guarantees all three will get a piece of the pie

Very cool. I assumed any ships built for the Navy would be awarded to someone outside Canada. I had no idea we had one, let alone 3, that could build ships of this size.

Winner!

Combat - 25 Billion - Halifax
Non- combat - 8 billion - Vancouver

I think that was the right decision. Awaiting to hear from Quebec now...

It wasn't really up for debate. Halifax is the only shipyard in the country that can build the Combat Vessels in reality since St Johns shut down.

Good for Vancouver for getting the other bid.

That would probably be the cheapest option, but it would be politically impossible for the gov't to buy the Canadian navy from the Koreans...
