Advanced High School Diplomas?
So we are cleaning up some old junk in our basement and my wife pulls my HS diploma out of a box and is confused that it is an "advanced" diploma. So I explained that the year I graduated, they introduced the new curriculum in HS which removed the advanced as a possibility, so by the time she got into High School (5 years later) everyone who would have got an advanced was already done.
In trying to explain how the new curriculum was different, I mentioned the science classes were changed - I took Chem/Physics (or Bio/Chem) 10 and 20 whereas people afterwords took Science 10 and then Physics, Bio and Chem 20 and 30. Another changed was from Math 10/20/30 to Pure Math and Math 13/23/33 to Applied Math. She claims that when she went to HS ( In Chestermere) it was like it was when I was in school.
Am I remembering these events properly? Or were they 2 separate events and CBE changed the classes where RockyView School district didn't - even though the diploma changes would have been province wide?

Rathji - your experience is identical to mine. My graduation year was also the last year under the old rules.

The math change was as you remember, but I definitely remember physics and chemistry 10 even after the change (Rockyview).
My grade 10 year was the year the changes took effect. However, since I was advanced a year on math, I took Math 10 in grade 9, so accumulated credits before the change. When I graduated, the government sent me an advanced diploma. A few weeks later I was sent a regular diploma and told to shred the advanced because I shouldn't have gotten it. ( )
I don't remember all the reasons for the change, but mostly I think it was the same as why some teachers mark in purple pens instead of red these days: fear of upsetting precious little snowflakes and their parents because their kids aren't as intelligent as they think.

This is really a very shallow excuse to show off your fancy diploma.

I graduated 8 years ago and the Science 10 part was the case then, but Math was called Pure 10/20/30 and Applied 13/23/33.

I graduated in 1996. Took Science 10 before taking the seperate sciences, Pure/Applied Math hadn't been split yet, and I'm pretty sure I have an advanced diploma.
I believe that the Science 10 thing was a school to school difference, while the Math split and the removal of the advanced diploma came city (board) wide.

Yes that is correct. I as well have an Advanced HS and the change was made the year after I graduated. All the 10/20 disapeared and were replaces with Science 10 and 20/30 levels.

At what age do you think results should begin to matter? Life doesn't give out participation medals, when is the right time, in your opinion, to make that transition?

Yeah my fancy high school diploma. My pride and joy. The apple of my eye and the sugar on my donut... Hmmm ... Donuts.

Forcing everyone down to the level of the lowest common denominator sets nobody up for success.

I received an advanced diploma and I went science 10/20/30. IIRC, it was necessary to have at least 20 credits of 30 (not 33) level courses. So math 30, science 30, social 30, and English 30, as well as at least 100 credits total, was sufficient for an advanced diploma.
I graduated in 96, and I think that was the last year before they pansified high school.

I graduated in '89 with an advanced diploma.
Then it was Math 10, 20, 30 with an option to take Math 31 as well for the advanced route and Math 13, 23, 33 for the general route...Sciences were broken up into Chemistry, Biology and Physics or General Science 10 if went the general diploma route.
I believe the core requirements for an advanced diploma at that time were Math 30, English 30, Social 30 and at least 1 of the 3 Sciences at the 30 level. You also needed to accumulate 100 credits to graduate.

1997 was when they switched to a "General" High School Diploma for everyone.

Hmmm, I would've thought an Advanced High School Diploma was called a University Degree...

As far as I remember, at my high school (Bishop Grandin in Calgary, graduated in 07), you could receive an advanced placement degree if you took AP course from grade 10-12. As well, this would also give you some credits for your first year university courses. That is the only advanced diploma that I can think of.
Pure Math and the separate sciences were in when I was there
