High Speed Rail for Canada?
Could high speed rail be coming to Canada?
http://news.nationalpost.com/2011/10...economy-study/
Quote:
A study into the feasibility of a high-speed train link in the Windsor-Quebec City corridor shows the project could benefit the entire Canadian economy. The report conducted by the EcoTrain consortium — grouping Dessau, MMM Group, KPMG, Wilbur Smith & Associates, and Deutsche Bahn International — was released Monday by High Speed Rail Canada, an advocacy group which promotes the service.

I think that the ability to travel downtown to downtown at 200kmh or 300kmh could be a good thing for transportation within our country.

That's not high speed rail for Canada, that's high speed rail for one specific section of Canada.

It would not benefit the entire Canadian economy. Yes maybe in that small portion of the country it could be beneficial to the everyday business traveler. Cost efficient? doubtful.
Canada is way to large with to small of a population to ever have a high speed rail system connecting the entire country.
Just my 2 cents

We can't even figure out how to set the C-train up properly and you want a high speed train? The amount of ways the city planners could screw that up are endless!

As a Canadian, I can say that I am not embarrassed not having high-speed rail available. That's quite the overstatement.

As someone who lives in that corridor, I would be very open to this. Toronto to Montreal in < 2 hours without the pain in the ass that air travel has become would be fantastic.

A high speed line between Calgary and Edmonton right now is nothing more than a "sexy" project. Everyone thinks it sounds really cool, but it would be a financial black hole.
Buy up the right of way and station lands (some of which has already been done) and then you can act when the numbers and population density make sense for it.

I'd be happy if Via could do regular speed rail properly, thought it would be cool to take my daughter across Canada by train a few years ago, I could have damn near bought an RV for the price it was going to cost, went to europe for 2 weeks and paid off the car instead.

I could see it being worthwhile to move labour between edmonton and fort mac, but it would be costly to build that on muskeg.

This project has 2 important benefits for Canada.
1. It shovels a crap load of federal money into Quebec.
2. It shovels a crap load of federal money into Ontario.

Keep in mind that a "crap load" of people live along that corridor, I would suggest between 1/3 and 1/2 of the entire population of Canada. I lived down east for a couple years and something like this would be excellent. I think considering something like this money to please quebec and ontario is quite short-sighted.

While Mr. Langan (and his good time buddies at High Speed Rail Canada) does have a great point about not being embarassed (who of us has not bought a bigger house or shiny new automobile because the did not want to be embarassed) - I'll wait until I hear from the president of Everything About Today's Rail Travel is Great/We like Low Speed Rail Travel before picking a side in this important debate.

I would love to have a high-speed link between Toronto and Ottawa/Montreal. Wouldn't need to make a stop-over in Pearson. Plus, trains are way more fun than airplanes. If you ever get a chance to take VIA Rail, you should.

If the whole thing wouldn't be profitable, but Toronto-Montreal would, then might as well do that.

High-speed rail in Alberta might be pie in the sky, but a link in Ontario/Quebec makes plenty of sense to me. It will happen eventually.

Hey I have no idea if it is a good idea or not, but I am damn sure the reason they are thinking about it is because it shovels a crap load of dosh to newly NDP voting Quebec ('quick kill it before it breeds!') and Ontario where the Tories are looking to hold on to what they have.

Sure, but if it pays back (that of course being a BIG if)... who cares?
