Default Metro Incorporated scam?

Guy called Mrs Rathji just, saying we had won a fairly large amount of money (5 digits) for shopping at Walmart, Tim Horton's, Canadian Tire, and that her Credit Card was used and was automatically entered into a draw. He just needed to "confirm her contact info". She of course hung up and called me right away to see if I have heard anything about it, and Google is not showing me anything, which is unusual for such a scam.

Anyone heard of this before? or is it just a random variant on everything that is already out there.

Funny story.

Last year I get a call from some number out east. It is someone claiming I had just won $1500 in Sears points. I said ,"Sorry, you are not going to hook me with some scam, you CROOK!." And the lady on the other end starts go "Whoa, whoa, whoa, don't hang up, did you buy a Hays Luggage set, and a Torque wrench in August?"

I go,"Yeeessss..?"

She replies ,"That weekend we were entering all of our Sears Card customers for a draw for a grand prize of $50,000 in Sears points and you were on of 10 runners up with a $1500 prize. I just wanted to call and congratulate you, and let you know to check your balance, since we will be crediting them in the next week or so. I just need to ask you a simple skill testing question"

I reply, "I am so sorry, I just called you a crook. I feel like an a-hole."

Her, "No worries, you are the third person that thought I was a scam."

So moral of the story, sometimes these calls aren't always a scam. I bought a couch and an exercise bike with my prize money if you are wondering....which of course you probably weren't.

If they're claiming it's based on purchases made with a credit card from 3 unrelated companies, then either it's a scam or Walmart, Tim Hortons and Canadian Tire have been illegally providing either credit card information or other personal information to a 3rd party. I'm guessing the former, with those 3 companies being named because most people they call would have bought from one or more of them.

I got a call the other day that started with a boat horn sounding and then "this is your captain speaking..."

I never made it past that first line. Think I missed out?

You clearly do not know my wife (and I hope she's not reading CalgaryPuck today or Old-Fart's sleeping on the couch).

That one's my favourite. Back when I had a landline, I used to get that one every week or so. At that rate, I could have been on vacation for life!
