Default Farmer sentenced to 90 days for defending his property.

Thieves got this...

Quote:
Groening, who now lives in B.C., was given a 30-day jail sentence for theft under $5,000 earlier in 2010 in Stettler court. Co-accused Rosenthal pleaded guilty last June to theft under $5,000 and was given a 15-day jail sentence. Dewald, another co-accused, was fined $400 for theft under $5,000.
The farmer was using birdshot. Slightly more dangerous than a pellet gun.
Sorry...link

The farmer should have used 10 gauge slugs instead of birdshot.

Cholla: [the Black Widows have shown up at Philo's home, Ma Boggs is on the porch, they pull their bikes into her yard and Cholla pulls up on the porch] Say, old lady, where's Philo Beddoe?
Ma Boggs: How the hell do I know? Get off my porch with that thing. Get off my property!
Cholla: You're uh... you're not very hospitable.
Ma Boggs: Hospitable my ass. Get off my porch!
Cholla: Very well, if you insist.
[Cholla chains his bike to a support on the front porch, pulling it down... bikers laugh, Ma pulls out a pump-action shotgun]
Woody: [seeing the gun] Alright lady... put down that gun now!
[bikers dive out of her way]
Woody: I'm warning you lady! Put down that gun now!
[Ma fires and bike next to Woody explodes... she shoots several other bikes as they're attempting to flee]
Ma Boggs: [during a recoil] Oof!
Woody: [running after his gang on foot] Wait for me!
Ma Boggs: [seeing the flaming bikes on her lawn... to herself] First the police, and I told those boys not to leave a vulnerable old lady all alone!
[goes inside with gun]
Ma Boggs: Hospitable? Horse####!

Should have used rock salt. Sends a non lethal message and burns like a mofo.

If he'd fired the shots while actually defending his property that would be one thing, but the thief had abandoned the ATV and was running away at the time the farmer shot him, so that's a totally different thing IMO.

True. It was more of revenge than defending his property. I like the idea of vigilante justice, but it is such a slippery slope that they had to charge the farmer really.

Oh, that's what happened, eh? That's what I get for reading the tabloid style OP and being too lazy to read the actual article. I've gone from outrage to agreeance with the sentence.

He shot him twice - both times as the thief was running away. It is really hard to argue with a judge on this one, as you can't shoot someone who isn't a threat to your person or another person.

Also Calgary Sun posters are worse than youtube posters.

Yeah, he shot him once then walked up to him and shot him again. Good to see a thief get what he deserved, but you can't have farmers handing out justice. It's not Libya or Iraq... we have due process here.
