Icon47 Washington Capitals Offseason update (Caps-Bruins trade and depth chart updated)

GM Hesla has been busy as usual wheeling and dealing. Last year he took an aging roster and dismantled it during the season in order to do a soft rebuild. This offseason the goal is to build through trades to vault the team back into a playoff position, while being better set up long term with some solid prospects.

At one point this offseason the Capitals were 8.5 Million over the cap and had to move out some big contracts for prospects/ahlers. Chris Phillips, Marco Sturm and Andy Sutton were all moved to clear the space. Currently the Capitals are sitting with 500K in space with the need for a 4th liner and a coach.

August 11th update: We have IMO vastly improved the forward corp from the start of the offseason. Some help on the 4th line and 2nd pairing defense and the team can go into the year as a contender .

August 20th update: A few recent trades had left us CHEESED TO THE MAX !!!!!!! Therefore, we downgraded Oduya in an
effort to add some flexibility and assets for further upgrades. Our goal is to continue upgrading everywhere if possible.

September 8th: UPDATED Depth chart.

September 19th update: New depth chart. This is likely the roster goin into the regular season

Grabovski (68) - Stastny (71) - Erat (68)
Fisher (68) - Peverley (68) - Kronwall (70)
Park (63) - Laich (67) - Ruutu (67)
Mitchell (60) - Niedermayer (62)- Burish (59)

Pitkanen (71) -Tyutin (70)
Scuderi (68) - Zidlicky (68)
Tallinder (67) - Garrison (65)

Thomas (86)
Greiss (69)

Fringe AHL/NHLers :

Mats Zuccarello-Assen, JT Wyman, Trevor Smith, Todd White, Jordan Hendry, Tim Kennedy, Davis Drewskie
Nathan Lawson

TOP Prospects

Nico Sacchetti
Craig Cunningham
Nick Ross
Alexander Killorn
Andrey Pedan

The prospect pool is Flames level poor now

Two deals were made in the last few days.

1) Tyler Bozak and Tyson Barrie were dealt for the Norwegian Hobbit Wizard

and in a controversial deal

2) Prospect Duncan Siemens and Andreas Nodl were sent to Columbus for Tuomo Ruutu and money.

Siemens is a very solid prospect, but the Caps were able to add a top 6 center/winger that has put up consistent solid offensive seasons.

Lineup is updated above

We don't think Ruutu is worth $5.5mill so when he got that contract we knew his time in Columbus was limited. We didn't think we would be able to get an 11th overall prospect in a deal for him so that makes MJK happy.

Updated with deal with Columbus...

Niklas Hagman, 2013 Washington 1st rounder and Ludvig Rensfeldt are going to Columbus in exchange for

Rich Peverley.

Peverly boosts the top 6 forwards and adds yet another Center to the stable to provide us with a lot of flexibility there. He is big upgrade on Hagman.

Rensfeldt and the 1st are solid assets, but you have to give to get.

Thanks Davey for the deal .

Peverly was not in our top 6 plans after we acquired Stastny. We take a 4OV downgrade for a 3rd liner but bring in some nice assets with him.

I like the deal for Washington. Peverly might be only a 4 overall downgrade but NHL was its a much bigger upgrade.

I think you are right but in the grand scheme of things we weren't going to sign Peverly to a UFA contract after the season. Hagman will be gone so to pick up two decent assets for a guy who was going to play on my 3rd line anyways is good enough for me.

Hesla also forgot to mention that he also covered all salary AND sent an addiitonal 500K for good measure. That was enough to make me do it.

I like the deal for both sides.
Washington wants to win now
Columbus gets something now and something later
Peverly doesn't deserve a grid deal but will probably somehow get one.

A few new roster moves.

Shean Donovan retires.

Also. Ales Kotalik and prospect Anton Blomqvist are heading to St Louis for Sean Avery.

Yes. We have added a villain to the roster. But he is an upgrade on kotalik.

Updated with Zidlcky deal and Avery trade.

Need to build a 4th line and moving Avery frees up some cap and ####### to do so.

New minor deal

To the Panthers

Nikita Nikitin (58)

To the Capitals

Chris Thorburn (61)
Adam Burish (59)
Tim Kennedy -AHL
1.3 million

Nikitin has the greatest upside in the deal, but for the Capitals it fills 2/3rds of a 4th line and adds a depth call-up in Kennedy.

Thanks to Caged Great for the deal

Way to make it seem insignificant Aaron...for the Blues this involves their top players moving!

Traded two old guys for 3 younger guys and a draft pick...we're rebuilding so this move makes sense for us.

Two new deals...

1) Oduya (66) + Cap to Colorado for Matt Hunwick (62), Alexander Khohkolchev, Davis Drewskie (57) and Austen Brassard

-> The deal was simply about gaining more flexibility to do deals. Oduya is a UFA and was currently our 6th Dman. Khohkolchev is a Russian that wants to play in North America and Drewskie will likely be the 6/7 guy in LA.

Thanks to Pat O'FAithy for the talks.

2) David Booth (65), Mark Fraser (58) and Drew Schiestel are going to Winnipeg for Martin Erat (68), Todd White (60 - AHL anchor) and Some Svedberg goalie.

This was a pure upgrade move, Booth is younger, but Erat has better ratings. Fraser has a bottom pairing upside, but Schiestel is a guy that Buffalo is really high on. The AHlers coming back were to help Nick comply with AHL limits and hopefully it helps our AHL team win more.

Thanks to Nick for the deal.
