Where can you find jobs in Calgary?

I have been out of the loop for awhile, I had three jobs in the past 10 years. Besides kijiji and the Jobshop,workopolis (all those websites) where can I find a place to employ me. It seems that people don't advertise any positions anymore. Maintenance, some electrical and tech work(using chemicals to blend poly urethanes).

calgaryjobshop.ca was a site that is most used for just about any industry.

I've mentioned this before, and it probably depends quite a bit on what industry you're in, but I'm a strong believer in the cold call. At the very least I think it's a good strategy to avoid going through HR as much as possible and get to the people are directly looking for staff.

That only works if you're somewhat charismatic. If you're not, that is probably a super bad strategy.

Find a really active online public discussion forum, sports one's are good, hockey in particular. Start a new thread entitled "where can I find jobs in Calgary"

Oh and don't forget to tell people what you do!!

I see blender positions being posted all the time with O&G service companies. Start looking at some bigger/well known guys like Trican, Weatherford, Champion etc.

www.indeed.ca is the best job site on the internet right now if you want to check.

The only problem with Jobshop is you will be flooded by calls from Pimerica and Amway and all of the other shady companies out there.

Jobshops tends to be the job board for lower end positions, labor positions and full commissioned or retail sales people.

Kijiji is pretty brutal for that too.

Depending on your skill set contact every recruiting firm in the phone book, they can do most of the work for you, depending on what your looking for.

The cold calling aspect can work well, just make sure you know what your going to say and who your going to say it too.

Monster is also used a lot make sure that your resume and profile are up to date.

I often wonder about these kinds of places. Is there normally any sort of downside to using a recruiter compared to just applying normally? I know my wife signed up for something like that and they ended up offering her the exact same position her sister was working at, but for $6 less an hour.

I am most probably going to be moving on from my current position when I finish school this spring and am contemplating my options/strategies.

It's not a job site, it's a search result site for corporate postings. Therefore, you can apply directly to the company for openings, rather than through a site like Workopolis or Monster.

Make a list of companies in Calgary you would want to work for. Go to their websites and view their career sections directly to see if they have listings. If nothing is there, call their HR department and ask if they have any jobs upcoming in what you are interested in.

If you ask people for help, more times than not they will be very receptive and go out of their way to help you.

Having said that, 90% of the postings already have a preferred candidate but you still have a chance.

Having a referral from a person who works in the company you are applying into is the best bet to get your foot in the door.

As I understand recruiters typically take a percentage of salary over a fixed period of time as opposed to a standard fee, so I would consider that a fairly significant drawback.

Because a lot of firms are now using Recruiting companies its one of the best ways of getting into the hidden job market if you don't have your own networking group.

Usually the recruiting firm will push for higher dollars because the more you make, the more they make type of thing.

While you should never ever give up your own private search methods ie job boards, website searches etc, adding multiple recruiting firms to your arsenal will get you a lot more opportunities.

When I left my last job and took a long break when I decided to get back into the job market, I pretty much exclusively used recruiting firms. I picked out 5 that were focussed on my industry and skill set, and within the first three days I was averaging about 3 interviews a day.

Oh and I forgot to mention - make sure you get your resume on LinkedIn .... there are a lot of HR people on there looking for candidates as well as jobs posted on the site.

I get at least an e-mail every other week from a company asking me to look at a position they are hiring for and more times than not its directly from a HR person at the place.

Thanks. I'm going to check both of these out. I have been finding it really hard to decide which jobs to apply for now that I am out of school. Do any of you older, wiser posters have any advice?
