Default Refrigerator Repair

I'm hoping someone on here might have some background knowledge in refrigerator repair...

We have a cheap, builder grade fridge that's only worth about $400 new. So we have hesitated on getting a repair person in to look at it. It costs $80 just to have them look and who knows what the cost to actually repair it would be.

The problem is that the fridge just randomly stops running. It will run - it just sometimes stops (as fridges do) and then doesn't start again. It get it to start again we have to turn the temperature knob thing at the front of the fridge - sometimes back and forth a few times until it kicks in.

Now - I know nothing of electrical stuff or compressors or any of that so I don't have any technical terms. But my husband has a general knowledge of that stuff (primarly computer based) but at least he understands the terminology.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Or lacking suggestions - any recommendations of an appliance repair person who doesn't charge $80 just to come to our house?
