Income Tax refund never came....
It's now the start of August, and I still haven't received my tax return. It's starting to really bother me.
So I went online and started digging to see what I could find, and finally found out from the Canada Revenue Agency webpage that it was assessed and my refund was sent out May 13th.
Obviously, this was right about the same time as the Canada Post strike, so I am wondering if it got lost in the mail, or something.
Can anyone help me on who to contact to locate my refund?

Might be a silly question, but are you sure you are supposed to recieve a cheque? My refunds come as direct-deposit into my bank account.

First thing I would do is contact Canada Revenue tomorrow morning via phone and inquire about the actual mail out date and mention that this was during the Postal Strike. Chances are you will get the standard answer that they have mailed it and have no control over the post system. You then can ask about a replacement cheque.
You will probably be asked to contact Canada Post to file a missing mail (I can't remember the technical name) inquiry. As it hasn't been two months, you'll probably be told to wait for the full 75 days (or more) before filing it. After that time, Canada Post will have you answer some more questions and have you sign a declaration that you have indeed not received it. Once you have received this, you will contact Revenue Canada again and find someone to send this as well as probably a copy of banking statements showing proof you haven't deposited it as well as another declaration and they will issue another cheque in 6 weeks.
The whole process takes about 2-3 months unfortunately.

well, I guess the good news here is that it HAS been 75 days since they said they sent me a cheque (May 13th).
ugh...this sounds like it's going to be painful...but it's also a large chunk of money....

Yea, I suppose May to August is 3 months, not 2. I'm glad I'm not operating heavy machinery.

This is a compete lie. All you need to do is call CRA (1-800-959-8281) and tell them you never received your refund. They will then verify that it has not been cashed and send you an affidavit to sign to certify that you did not receive it and they will issue you a new payment. The entire process takes 3-4 weeks not months.

I've gone through this before and you have to have verification from Canada Post if Revenue Canada confirms that they have sent the cheque and that you should have received it. If Canada Post loses it, you must show that they have lost it in order to have it reissued. This is why they are pushing direct deposit so heavily since its a clerical headache trying to get it sorted out when a cheque is lost.
As with most corporations, once its in the hands of Canada Post, they are no longer responsible for it. If you don't receive it, its up to you to prove that Canada Post did not deliver it. Once that has been satisfied, then they will deal with issuing a new one.
If every place just re-issued a cheque because you said you didn't get it without some sort of confirmation from Canada Post that it wasn't delivered, they would be out a lot of money.

You do not need proof from Canada Post at all. That is the reason they send you an affidavit to sign.

Did you move in 2010? This happened to my girlfriend this year, and apparently simply updating your address on your T1 isn't enough, and you have to fill out a change of address form. It took a few weeks for her after signing the affidavit/CRA putting a stop payment on the cheque that was originally sent to the old address.

This reminds me of a painful experience back when they started doing direct deposits.
I filed my tax return and filled in the deposit info. Weeks go by and my assessment arrives but no money in my account. So I call, and they say it has been deposited. So of course I tell them it isn't and they send me out the affidavit form to sign and return.
I finally get my money, then a couple weeks later they are contacting me and saying got paid twice. Huge runaround and back and forth, then I finally get them to tell me the account # of the account the money went into. Turns out it was an account for me, in my name, in my bank, that was automatically setup unknown to me in the process of getting a car loan a couple years previous (that had already been paid off).
Somehow, the bank or the government decided they were going to use this account. I certainly didn't tell them about it because I didn't know it existed.
It actually made me so mad that I didn't bother filing my taxes the next year since, I figured I owed anyway, but I wont get into that because it is another long story that results in me finding out that if you are 5 years late filing a return, the CRA files it for you (and not very favorably!)

Hurry up and tell us what they say! What could have been a really dry thread turned into what can only be called a war of wills! We must know the victor - chop chop! Emotionally, I have to say I'm invested in seeing Drury18 win, just because of cSpooge's random hostility.

That sucks. What I would do (and did do last time I had this issue) is get them to direct deposit it in your account from now on.

I never said I was a rational 19 year old.
I don't remember exactly but I assume I wasn't in a rush to file and eventually just forgot about it.

This is correct. Very simple process, no Canada Post necessary.
Thanks for the help, cSpooge.
