Bulbs first, flatscreens second, vacuum cleaners next?
The EU goes insane yet again:
EU bid to sweep away powerful vacuum cleaners
IT HAS banned the incandescent light bulb and reduced the power of flatscreen TVs to save energy. Now the European Union is planning to reduce the suck of vacuum cleaners in a move that threatens the cleanliness of the nation's homes.
The EU will next month put out a draft regulation for consultation that, if approved, will see the most powerful vacuum cleaners taken off the market to cut energy use and protect the environment.
While 2,000-watt vacuum cleaners are now popular purchases, the new rules will restrict the size of motors to just 900 watts.
I wonder if the brainiacs accounted for increased el.consumption due to increased vacuuming time.

Meanwhile...
The European Parliament's monthly move from Brussels to Strasbourg generates more than 20,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year, Green Party MEPs say.
The Green Party commissioned the study, which says the carbon cost is equal to 4,000 households in London.
Nearly 800 MEPs travel by air, road and rail to Strasbourg - along with hundreds of EU officials, journalists, lobbyists and 15 lorry-loads of official documents.

Not to mention it costs tonnes of taxpayers money to fund this travelling circus.
What a joke.

why is removing incandescent bulbs and reducing the power of tv so insane? when the point is to save energy. We have better options in both of those areas...
the vacuum cleaner... i could go either way on those, but it seems to me its' the same idea as limiting the efficiency of a car in terms of gas milage. I doubt the average person will spend more than double the time vacuuming with a less powerful vacuum cleaner anyways.

Because they have no right to tell me what kind of a vacuum cleaner i can or cannot buy. What is this, Soviet Russia controlling every aspect of our lives? Saving energy? Where does it stop? What's the point of producing energy anyway? Maybe so people can power their home appliances? And now a bunch of useless bureacrats in A/C offices/limo's/jets is telling me that my vacuum cleaners uses too much energy? &$%# them!
The fact that European parliament is moving back and forth between Brussels and Strasbourg wasting resources without blinking an eye is just a icing on the cake.

I still haven't figured out why FoL hasn't moved to Somalia. Absolutely no government telling you what you can and cannot do. I even offered to pay his way there.... *shrug*
It's not without "blinking an eye". There is VERY HEAVY support for having one location for the EU parliament and given how much everyone hates the arrangement for logistical, fiscal AND environmental reasons, I think within the next five to ten years the EU parliament will choose one site or the other.
From http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worl...e-energy.html:
Quote:
Dyson, which makes some of the most energy efficient vacuum cleaners available for the domestic market, produces appliances with an average energy input of around 1.2kW but it has just produced a 650 Watt DC24 Dyson Ball.
The company's founder James Dyson gave the European Commission's proposals a cautious welcome but added that developing new technology required to improve efficiency can take years.
He said: "Bigger motors don't equal better performance. In fact they symbolise outmoded ineffective design.
"Breakthrough technology takes time to develop. Our engineers have spent a decade developing highly efficient digital motors."
Marlene Holzner, energy spokesman for the EC, said: "Technology is a rapidly developing and we have seen in other areas that it is capable of reducing energy while keeping all the functions and performance the same, if not improving them."
Paul Pearce, technical director of the national carpet cleaning association, said: "The performance of a vacuum cleaner has more to do with airflow than with the power rating, so it should be possible to reduce the power without affecting the cleaning perforance."

lol 5-10 years to make a decision that should have been made ages ago. sounds like a perfect example of bureaucratic efficiency. Also I see it's easy to buy plane tickets for strangers...when you are on a generous salary from public funds, of course

The one we have says that is has 220 air watts of power, but I am not sure if that is what we are talking about. If so, I can't imagine that 900 watts ins't more than enough.

Flame of Liberty: did you know the Soviet Russian-esque Harper Government (TM) announced way back in 2007 that incandescent light bulbs would be banned for sale in Canada as of 2012?

If I spend $100-150 in light bulbs I would expect my energy bill to recover that cost over the next year, but instead the bill is basically the same, or not notably different. The most irritating thing is that you turn on a light and it takes a few minutes to warm up...talk about the dark ages!
Anyway, sorry to derail thediscussion about vacuums and why the new law in Europe sucks.

While he's doing that, maybe he can buy lead based paint, a ford pinto and a cornballer .

They aren't legal anywhere but they were continued to be marketed there successfully.

You can get different colours.
I actually like the white light ones for my main level, really brightens up the room.

Can I get one the color of a nice, warm incadescent light bulb?
