Alberta's economy to blame for Edmonton's murder rate...
http://www.calgarysun.com/2011/08/01...city-spokesman
Quote:
Alberta’s boom economy is partly to blame for Edmonton’s gruesome murder rate this year, said the chief spokesman for the capital’s city hall that’s also smarting from some of the media coverage.
The spokesman — recently-transplanted Calgarian Jeff Angel — said Edmonton’s bearing the brunt of a petroleum-driven workforce that blows off steam, leading to violence.
“Edmonton’s the hub of the North...these workers leave their camps and what’s the first big city they come to?” said Angel.
“Edmonton’s a happening town and when they come from a dry camp, it’s a bit like coming to Disneyland.”
On Sunday, Edmonton police confirmed the city’s 33rd homicide of the year — a man stabbed while sleeping on a park bench.
It was the fourth killing in a week, while in seven months, Calgary’s only recorded three homicides.

Sounds a lot like the mayor of Vancouver after the riots.
How does Edmonton have so many murders compared to Calgary? I don't think the economy in Calgary and Edmonton are that far apart to lay blame at it for the crime rate in Edmonton.

The mayor is right about Edmonton's location being ideal for some of the more interesting characters working in the north, but I'd put some of the blame on Edmonton's corrupt and inept police force.

First off, Edmonton is so funny with their obsession with hating us. It happens all the time in their newspapers and on television news. They just had to get that the City of Edmonton representative recently moved there from Calgary as if it is a) some sort of dig on Calgary or b) it gives some sort of legitimacy to Edmonton because a Calgarian moved there.
Secondly, do they really want to be putting the message out that "We're a good city. We just have a lot of idiots who can't function in society without resorting to violence who come here to commit said acts of violence"?

A lot of the murders in Edmonton are drug related, less so random, probably turf wars or disputes. There have been a few cases of homeless getting killed as well.

A very good portion of the people involved in the murders have been those living a high risk lifestyle: homeless people, drug addicts, alcohol issues...etc. Seems to me it's a really bad year in Edmonton, and a good year in Calgary.
I would like to see some evidence from Nuclearpizza on why the EPS are to blame for some of these murders. I suspect he's just talking out of his ass, but you never know.

Most of Edmonton's murders are committed by people that want to live in Winnipeg.

Please. I've stayed at (and currently in) a "dry" camp. There are no such things. People often bring beer into their rooms or drive up to Fort Mac and go to bars. Guys who want to drink, especially those that would get stabby after a few, will wherever they go.
A lot of these guys either drive or fly into Edmonton and then immediately fly (or drive, in my case) home. I'm one of maybe 5 guys on site that is from Alberta, and of those 5; all are from Calgary.
Edmontons murder rate has nothing to do with giddy industry workers coming back to "the hub of the north."

By that logic we should be dropping like flies up here in the Mac!
Does he have anything to support this? Of the murders that have been solved or have a suspect, how many of the perps have been from a dry camp, I wonder.

A good portion of the murders this year can be attributed to one small community in Edmonton. Don't want to point that group out, but it starts with the letter S and ends with the letter A.
Our murder rate this year is sort of an aberration, but Edmonton is always among the leader in murders within Canada. Don't really know why it keeps happening this year, but I try not to be out in some communities at night.
Oh and Mandel is a jackass, surprised he isn't blaming the construction, heat, or mosquito's. Whatever it takes to bring up an excuse, eh Steve?

If it's fact then what's the problem? You are talking about the Somalian community, but they are still here in Calgary and other cities in Canada. What is does it only happen in Edmonton on a large scale....

I work in a dry camp... And I've also been to Disneyland. In no way is Edmonton like Disneyland, no matter how long you've been in camp.

Seems like a rash of ethnic-based crime to me, which isn't out of the ordinary. Calgary had a similar problem a few years ago, where there was a rash of violence that mostly involved Southeast Asian gangs.
Once again I reiterate that murders and violence in Calgary seem to have been curbed a bit since the deportation of Jackie Tran last year. Maybe Edmonton has a scapegoat they can kick out too?
