Pre-Paid Legal - scam?
So a friend on Facebook asked me to check out a video of a new business she was starting up. It’s for Pre-Paid Legal, and man, are the sales guys in that video slimy. I had never heard of it before, and some preliminary research shows it to be above board legally, but it’s still a Multi-Level Marketing/Network Marketing business. Any discussion I’ve found online seems to have a couple of PPL advocates show up to vigorously defend the company, so…
a) Has anyone ever had any experiences with this company, positive or negative? Any good horror stories about aggressive recruiters?
b) What’s a good creative way to shut down this “friend”?

Scam.
I've heard that crap pitch before. Trust me, you pre-pay but there'll always be a 'legal' reason why they cant help you.
You're better off just buying regular insurance.

Enlighten me - are you pre-paying for some sort of legal services (wills, family law, crim?) in the future at a discount rate? Is that the hook? Presumably, they've paid some affiliated lawyer/law firm in advance for some basic services?
They are betting that, as with many gift certificates, you will never cash in. The services offered are probably very basic, and anything at all useful will require payment over-and-above the basic cost. Presumably, these services are also not being offered by big, reputable firms, so by the time you need them, the lawyer in question could be out of business/disbarred.

DO NOT BE A VICTIM SCAM ALERT!! BEWARE OF PREPAID LEGAL PLANS
Why would you pay a monthly fee to talk to a lawyer when most lawyers will talk to you for free?
PrePaid Legal charges you for things which lawyers will normally provide for free Generally they offer you "access" to a lawyer for a monthly fee. The impression is that you are almost getting some sort of "insurance" plan. That is just not true.
PrePaid Legal Plans are sold using Multiple Level Marketing (MLM) techniques. MLM is generally regarded as disreputable and dishonest.
CanLaw regularly gets attacked by fools who have been taken in by the PrePaid Legal Plan. They always say that PPL is listed on the NY stock exchange as if that means anything. When we ignore them we often get threatening emails laced with misspelled swear words and pathetic syntax. These people can be violent, which coupled with their stupidity and lack of ethics, makes them dangerous.
The people peddling PPL are the same type of con artists who last month tried to get you to join their latest water filter DOWNLINE so they can exploit you. Next month it will be some new scam. People like these will rob you blind and then steal your white cane.
MLM is always a scam. Usually it is illegal. The people who are selling these programs are not to be trusted.

Well that's all I need to see.
If the local lawyer is telling us this is a scam then I know 1 thing must be true....
He's afraid of how awesome this product is.
Quick someone tell me where I can buy in.....I want to do it twice!

I know a few reputable lawyers and firms in Calgary that provide a sort of pre-paid legal service. Usually they are providing assistance to a company's HR department, helping out with questions concerning hiring/firing, policy manuals, pensions, etc. for a flat monthly fee. I know in another instance the service is provided on behalf of an insurance/benefits provider that offers up to x minutes of lawyer time (by phone) each month to subscribers of the plan. It usually results in the sort of calls you would expect to get as an articling student or through Lawyer Referral.
In both instances I think the service being offered is legitimate. It doesn't cover every legal need as problems outside the scope of service will require a separate retainer. The lawyers I know who do this stuff say that their clients seem happy with the service.
Now, PPL as a MLM entity is probably something completely different and a distinction should be made.

Dammit, Troutman, don't sit on the fence here!
I'm just still amazed that anyone who knows me would to get me involved with a MLM.
