Part 1 was yesterday. Its a 3 day total points event, with the winner receiving $2 million. Ken Jennings is a finalist of course, Jerome Vered and Brad Rutter are his competition.
Great first show, with Ken actually in 3rd place, but it's really close. Brad has 18,400, Jerome with $16,400 and Ken with $16,000. None of them bet a large amount on final Jeopardy. Should be a fun finish.

I'm watching it but it's not a lot of fun when the questions are so hard. Those "Before and After" categories are just brutal.
I thought the SuperNerd would walk away with this thing but I guess not.

nice to see him finally getting some competition. Thought he was going to run away with it at the beginning, but the other two guys are just as sharp. Hope it goes right down to final Jeopardy in game 3.
edited to say agreed on the tough questions. I fancy myself a pretty decent trivia guy, but I was freaking hopeless on most of them yesterday. Ouch.

I think when the contestants are as smart as these three it really just becomes a game of who can press the button the fastest. And the person that will win will most likely be the fastest button pusher, not the guy that's the best at trivia.
I thought Ken would be mopping the floor with them too though. I bet the other guys think about all the millions they could have made if it wasn't for the 5 time champion rule that they had and Ken didn't.

It seems like the competition is automatically better off given they've had a whole tournament of experience before this 'match'. I heard Ken say once that the timing of pressing the button is everything; you can't just press it hard and fast, you have to time when Trebeck finishes talking. The person who presses first doesn't get the question, the person who presses first after the judges release the buttons goes first.
So, in this case, all three guys have good button-pressing experience, as opposed to the losers Ken was mopping up, who were just getting the button-hang of things right around when they lose.
A theory, anyway.

Yup, I would agree with that. I think the button-pusing game has a lot to do with why Ken was as dominant as he was.
And I think the winner of this ultimate tournament of champions will eventually come down to whoever is the best at the button-pressing game... All three of them probably know the answer to the majority of the questions. They just have to press the button at the right time so they get to answer.

You gotta admit these guys are unbelievably smart as well, the questions aren't for dummies.

Yes, I admit that. They blow me out of the water. I can usually get at least half of the questions on the show right and usually the final question as well. But last night I was sitting there with a dumbfounded look on my face most of the time thinking "Who would know that??". My point about the button pushing, is that they all seem to be so smart that the only thing separating them is the ability to push the button quickly.

according to your theory ken will lose. The others had to go through the tourny to get there and ken got an automatic buy into the finals therefore not practised up for the button.

If I had to predict, I would say the guy in the middle, Brad I think his name was, will win. A couple of times I noticed all three of them trying to ring in (I'm pretty sure anyway ... Ken makes it hard to tell) and Brad was the one that got in first.

Great idea they had.
Agreed. Ken will probably have rust but once he gets in a groove he could go on a run. Nice to see him get a challenge though.
Button pressing is key but you have to know the answer as well or all the best button pressing in the world is not going to help you.
Very impressive. Very low scoring game. all 3 are probably feeling each other out..

Welllll... no. According to my theory, Ken has something like 80+ games experience under his belt (I believe). How many games have these guys each won to get here? I doubt nearly as many...
Button-pressing edge goes to Ken due to total experience... its just that the edge isn't a chasm like it was against rookie pushers.

I think it will be the daily doubles that make or break them.

So Ken is now in second by a fair bit.
Great game but having that guy Brad get the final question right puts him in the drivers seat.
I hope Ken can pull it out.

So one more game left? What time is Jeopardy on NBC? Been years since I've watched.

Anyone notice that Ken from Utah couldn't answer any questions about guns and ammo? hehe. They need some Brigham Young categories for him to come back from that 12000 deficit.
