Well, not exactly a scientific survey, but I was listening to CBC radio today at lunch and they asked some people in Ottawa, and many thought Calgary was theAlberta capital.
I guess there is a celebration of Alberta culture at one of the museums in Ottawa. Alberta artists, musicians, and other Albertans who have contributed to some aspect of Canadian culture are featured there. Anyway, the CBC radio person asked people at the museum questions about Alberta, and many answered that Calgary was the capital of Alberta. Most immediately corrected themsleves, but it was still pretty funny. The person asking the questions then asked why they thought Calgary, and basically people in the east have the impression that Calgary is more recognizable, cosmopolitan, prettier, etc...
I don't know why I am posting this, I guess I thought it was kind of interesting. I of course agree and think Calgary is an excellent city, but I was suprised that people out east do distinguish Calgary and Edmonton so well.

And the capital of New York State is Albany so I don't think where your capital is matters much.
We already have a legislative building in Edmonton so may as well use it!

This is rather ironic, actually. Out east, they seem to despise Americans. To refer to anything as "American" or "American-style" is an insult. Yet, they seem to be as ignorant about Canada as Americans are. :P

Does it really matter, personally I prefer B.C to Alberta, really the only thing about calgary I like is the sports teams. But if they want to change the Capital why not to a medium-sized city that could use the boost and help make three large cities in Alberta instead of two.

I am sure Ralph Klein would back that movement.

It's actually very regular for the lesser city (burn!) to be the capital.
Victoria, not Vancouver is capital of BC. Olympia is capital of Oregon, not Seattle. Sacremento, is capital of California and home to the governator.

I think most of the state capitals are where they are because they are the closest to the geographic centre of the state.

well, Calgary was supposed to be the capital back in 1905, but some say, because Edmonton had Liberal representation and Calgary didn't, Laurier gave the nod to Edmonton.
I personally don't see a need to move it cause some Easterners are too dumb to know our capital yet complain that Americans don't know where Iqaluit is on a map.
If we did... I'd put it in Red Deer... right in between Calgary and Edmonton, and could use a boost.

His rants about their track and field thingy being bigger than the Olympics was solid gold.

I was under the impression they were trying to pull more people northward to assert sovereignty in the area?
Also, up until just before they picked a capital the area had beed associated provincially with the northern territories - making Edmonton a far more central location.

well I know the provincial capitals, and territorial capitals all off the top of my head, going west to east or east to west.
NF - St John's
NS - Halifax
PE - Charlottetown
NB - Freddy-ton
PQ - Quebec City
ON - Trawanna
MB - Winterpeg
SK - Regina
AB - Edmonton
BC - Victoria
NV - Iqualit
NW - Yellowknife
YK - Whitehorse
I dunno if I like the capital being in the largest most propserous city or not. Some provinces it's the most prosperous because it's the capital (gov't concentration there) others it's quietly doing the work in the background.
Should Calgary be the captial? I don't see why you should bother changing it. It'd cost an arm and a leg (mind you if any province could afford it...)
Might be better to have it in Red Deer, inbetween the two cities with the fragile egos :P

and I don't think it's fair to call easterners ignorant, when you're calling people from Ottawa Easterners. We who live in the forgotten part of the country resent that

I don't think they are ignorant. Like I said, the ones who said Calgary corrected themselves pretty much right away and were like; "Duh, I knew that". It was just a brain fart. The point is that when people think of Alberta, Calgary is the city that stands out. The image people have of it seems to be very positive. It's certainly different than what a lot of Calgarians are led to believe about what people in Ontario think of them.

I'm originally from New Brunswick, and I hate it when Albertans refer to Ontario as "The East" or whatever. Ontario is Central Canada, and the citiznes who live there are Central Canadians (or if you're from the Maritimes, you can call them "Upper Canadians").
Notice to people from Ontario: I said "Central Canada", not "Centre of the Universe". :P

Anything east of Winnipeg is the east. And if your east of Winnipeg (maybe Thunder Bay?) you probably suck, so being mid east, south east, or east east it really doesn't matter.
Its kind of like being south of Red Deer. You all can't help it that Calgary sucks, it just does.
