I hate dust! But my office gets warm with my computer running all the time, and keeping the window open keeps it cooler but also invites a ton of dust to come in and coat everything.
Forget dust, dog hair is the true enemy. I'm literally replacing the carpet in my house with tile and hardwood just to make dog hair management easier.
Wouldn't installing a quality furnace and routinely changing the filter do the most good for dust?
I don't have dogs but I hear you about the carpet thing, our house only has carpet in the bonus room, on the stairs, and in the 2nd and 3rd bedrooms, everything else is tile or wood.
I hate carpet.
In this case it's not dust that's coming from the furnace, it's dust that's blowing in through the window when I have it open. During the winter or when it's cooler and I have the window closed it isn't a problem, but keep the window open a few days and there's a significant layer of dust on everything, so I figure I can stop it at the source (the window) while still keeping the window open to let the air in/out.

I think what Kybosh is saying is if you turn your furnace on to circulate the air, it should cycle through the filter and that might help a bit...
I guess, but the dust is thickest on the printer near the window, so mostly it's just air blowing in through the window and dropping dust, so by the time it leaves the office, goes down the cold air return, and through the filter it'll have dropped most of its dust load in my office already.
Hm yeah a room air purifier might help.
