Fishing season is a month away, who is excited?
For us in SK, fishing season opens on May 8th for the south... and I am getting very, very excited. Looking to spark some conversation on the topic.
It is about that time of year where I hold off as long as I possibly can to go to the fishing store because I know there will be multiple trips the sooner I go..
I think I might treat myself to a new set up this year, I have been using the same $60 shakespeare crap reel for about 6 years, waiting for it to break so I can justify spending 150+.
I also think this year I might try to get into fly fishing, it looks like a lot of fun and there is definitely not a shortage of rivers in Sask.
What is the best brand for fly fishing reels?

In fly fishing, your reel is really not important at all. Buy a cheap reel and put the extra money into a better rod.

If you think a reel isn't important in fly fishing, it just means you've never caught any big fish.

IIRC, the Bow and Crowsnest River are open year round. Streams north of the Bow drainage open in April (browns spawn in the fall), and south of the Bow in mid-June (rainbows and cutthroats spawn in the spring).
Time to go out for some spring Browns.
You don`t need a great reel - mostly you are playing smaller trout by hand.

I would love to catch some trout fly fishing.. I know Wall Eye are sought after fish for fresh water, but they do get boring after a while.
At least with jacks you can always get surprised by a really big one.
I should do some research on what the hot spots are around Saskatoon.
This is the reel I am going to pick up this year:

For the amount of fishing I do (about 2 weekends a month) the price range is about right where I want to be.

Ya, I'm getting pretty pumped too. I have the same type of reel, it aint gonna break anytime soon
I finnaly did get a new rod this year (my fishin chums were nice enough to break my two last ones). I bought one of those ugly sticks. Solid rod for sure, already caught a few on it. Good feel, good action I really like it.
I am hoping to buy a new reel soon though. Gonna head up to Malzac and check out the Bass Pro Shop for the first time ever. REALLY looking forward to seeing that place even though my wallet isn't.
Also plan to pimp out the tin can this year. Getting tired of sitting on metal seats that feel like they are reaching 100 degrees in the sun. Going to get some rod holders, seats and a fish finder.
One day I will buy a new boat but this one has been in my family for YEARS. Fast as hell even with just the 9.9 Mercury on it. Got a few leaks in her but nothing a little silicon wont take care of.
FISH ON!!

I learned how to float a fly on the Bow in the 80s, that river held some very nice fish...

You can't beat an old Merc motor..
Those ugly sticks are the best bang for their buck. You can get pretty expensive in rods, but I have seen to many $100+ rods snap in half to spend that kind of money. Especially on the fishing trips I usually hit up where its drink your face off first fish second.
Ugly stick also has a new carbon tipped rod out that is supposed to be better for sensitivity, I think I am going to give that one a shot with this new reel.
Also my lure pick of the summer is the Mepps syclops:

You can't go wrong with this bad boy, especially for trolling.

Ya, my ugly stick has some kind of tip on it, not sure if its the carbon one you speak of but man does it add a lot of feel. I need to buy some new tackle this year. Most of my stuff is meant for the big fish way up north, the southern over fished lakes have fish with mouths far to small for the hooks I currently have. I'll start with your recomendation

When I am off duty...
Ya like I said, ugly sticks are best bang for their buck. I have had one for years and have loved it. But again, the carbon tip is better for more feeling which I am looking at grabbing. You can't feel a whole lot on the regulars.. but they can take a dirty licking.
And those syclops I swear by them. It has out fished every lure I've got. It even trolls better than the trust five of diamonds! Sorry Len..
Also looking at grabbing a few of these new Rapala trolling lures:
http://www.rapala.com/products/lures/trolls-to-shad/
They will be nice for dirty water.

My pop gets a 50% guide discount with Orvis, so we fish with the best. I'm not so big into it, but I'll go out a few days this summer in my dad's drift boat. There is really no better way to relax.

Seriously? That alone say a lot about that lure then. 5 of diamonds is my go to lure when I'm having a rough go. I sent that link to my home email so I remember to buy one.
I haven't had a ton of luck with the Rapala's. Maybe I'm just not using them in the proper situation. I have a tackle box full of them but not a ton of luck. I think that's more me then the lure though. Maybe I need to diversify them a bit.

Also crowsnest pass and go after some cut throats
what are all of your favorite flyfishing spots in alberta besides the bow?

Fly-fishers are a secretive bunch and will not easily disclose their favorite fishing holes. Part of the fun is finding your own places, and trading knowledge with others. A good book to get is Barry Mitchell's Alberta's Trout Highway. His annual Alberta Fishing Guide is also good.

I will say that the Livingstone River is a good place to fish - catch and release only.
Crowsnest River is famous for rainbows. Look for cutthroats in the Oldman drainage.
I doubt there is any fish in McLean Creek, the way the ATVs tear it up.
Jumpingpound Creek is marginal in my experience, but the upper reaches might be ok.
