Helmet Protester Dies from Head Injury
A biker was killed Saturday while protesting New York’s state law requiring helmet use. 55-year old Phillip A. Contos was riding with others in Upstate New York when he flipped over the handlebars of his 1983 Harley Davidson, striking his head on the pavement. The ride was organized by ABATE (American Bikers Aimed for Education), but the group is unsure if Contos was a member. Police report that, had he worn a helmet, he probably would have survived.

At least he died doing what he loved most. Isn't that what they were fighting for?

Top marks for irony, but a darwin award? I would think a darwin award results from doing something so outrageously reckless and stupid that death is somewhat inevitable. The dude was riding a hog.

Well considering that Hog tech has long been considered in the stone ages (and my first thought is that something fell off this Hog causing the front wheel to lock, flipping the rider over the bars), some parts of the bike community think that riding a Hog is worthwhile of the Darwin award in itself.

In no way am I a Harley or biker apologist. They are a POS marketed to a dissapearing demographic. Their biggest growth market today are MMA fans. My point was that the act of riding down the road on a motorcycle would not normally be considered a death defying act, although riding without a helmet definitely introduces an unnecessary risk. I would consider the idiots who splatter themselves on the Deerfoot after wiping out at 150 mph on their rice rockets more suitable darwin award recipients.
