This weekend marks the 60th anniversary of VE day which I believe is the day Holland was officially freed from Nazi rule during the second world war. For a lot of veterans this could very well be the last major reflection back on the very significant role they played in the history of the world. Back in 1995 I happened to be in Holland for the 50th anniversary of VE day. I was backpacking with a couple of friends and we were wearing our Canadian flags as most backpackers in Europe do. Everyone on the streets would say high to us, and treated us really well. It opened my eyes as to how much these people were thankfull for Canada's contributions to the second world war. We were met with similar treatment in Belgium and France in the coming days. On a couple occasions I've visited Canadian war memorials in France, and can't say I've ever felt more pride in being Canadian than I have at those moments. I have the utmost respect for those who fought in the two world wars for Canada as I believe these people made perhaps the biggest contribution to defining Canada in the World. I believe the surviving veterans are true hero's and I'd like to recognize these monumentus day for them. Although the veterans themselves will not live forever, their legacy will.
