question/moral job related help needed
The company I work for now has a week starting on Saturday and they tend not to put the schedule out until Friday afternoon. I just learned yesterday that I got a new job at another hotel and they want to start me asap. My question is should I give a two week notice? or should I work today and let them know that I'm resigning?
The reason why this is an issue is because the microtel doesn't put it's schedule out until Fridays so it's going to almost make it impossible to work out a two week notice. But I don't want to leave on bad terms.
What should I do?

I guess in my mind it doesn't matter when they put out a schedule; you say you are giving 2 weeks notice as of today.
Also, talk to your new employer and tell them you think you should give 2 weeks notice. Most employers will respect that; as they don't want to hire people who tend to quit without notice.

Couple of factors:
1) How long have you worked there? 2 weeks notice is usually only required when you have been in a role over a year or so. (but is the norm and much more considerate)
2) Often if you are leaving for a competitor..you will be walked out.
Be open and honest, that you have a chance to pursue a different role that is better suited/oppurtunity for you, and that you would like to help with the transition. If you can help train someone for a few days, offer to do that.

I've been at my current hotel since November 2009. I am leaving for another hotel in town too. I just think that it's going to cause a huge problems if I do put a two week notice in, but then again I owe it to the GM to at least tell her that I'm leaving.

Talk to the GM and give them the notice. Be honest why you are leaving. Not too honest. Keep it positive. People leave jobs all the time so don't be concerned about causing a problem. If they get all bitchy about you leaving don't worry about it. You are doing it the right way.

He's not in Alberta.
Go with honesty. Tell them you have been offered an opportunity that you can't pass up and that you are grateful for the past 2 years. This will leave the door open if another position opens up later on.
Give 2 weeks, offer to train your replacement.

If you go in an explain that you've been offered a position with another employer that is a better opportunity for you, that you've enjoyed your time with your current company and will miss the people you're working with, I'm sure they'd understand.
I've found that if you give notice, often employers will just let you work out your current schedule without worrying about future schedules.
All of this is assuming your GM is not a d*uchnuts; I'd assume if they were you wouldn't be worried about the 2 weeks notice.

Pretty easy, imo.
1. Let your boss know that you've accepted a position elsewhere.
2. Thank him/her for all the opportunities.
3. Explain that the new employer requires you on "X Day".
4. Give as much notice as you reasonably can (up to and ideally 2 weeks).
At the end of the day, you've made a commitment to your new employer and they get top consideration.
BTW - CONGRATS!! I hope you enjoy the new job!

I've always given 2 weeks notice, reguardless of how long I've been there. I've only had one employer be a complete *****tard after my notice was given. Frankly if they want to be ignorant about it, fine. I know I've done what I felt was appropriate.
