Default Bird(s) in a vent...

We discovered yesterday that we have at least one bird that has taken up residence in our bathroom vent. I know that once it's gone we'll get a better cover and prevent this from happening down the road, but how do we get it or them out?

I know that we could do something like spray perfume into there from the bathroom side and that might work. I'm reluctant because they might have a nest there though and that might make the adults abandon this and we'll be left with a rotting nest! For a similar reason I don't want to just seal them in there.

My wife got up on a ladder last night and she couldn't see much. She thinks there is a nest, but it's hard to say...they could be pretty far back. (This was from the outside of the house btw)

So CP, what say you? Is there someone we should be calling? I really have no idea how to deal with this...I just know that as lovely as the singing is we'd like to get rid of them sooner rather than later!

Worst Samuel L. Jackson movie so far.

To be honest, I haven't got a clue what the right way to deal with this is. I think that the perfume idea is a really smart opening move.

If you want to get the nest out, perhaps you can fashion a scooping device to "Snag and Lift" the nest?

Alternatively, perhaps 311 and Bylaw Services may have an idea?

PS - Grats on making the wife to climb the ladder. :P

Well to be honest I'm recovering from surgery and can't do it myself. Otherwise she would've been in the kitchen while I dealt with this (or at least looked around as though I knew what to do!)

The problem with just lifting the nest is that it's too far back to actually see/lift. I gave my wife our longest set of tongs and she reached in there and tried to grab at whatever was within reach, but to no avail.

1. Get a really strong air compressor
2. Attach to bottom end of vent and seal
3. Blow birds out of vent like a cannon*

*I have no idea if this would actually work but sounds like it would be awesome if it did

We had some in the vent for out bathroom last spring and I actually did what Hanni suggested. A couple cans of compressed air got the birds out and the chicks near the edge where I grabbed them and moved them. I kind of wanted to let them move out on their own but when examining the vent I found a dead one so the eviction notice was posted and they lost their damage deposit.

I used one of those wire picker things that mechanics use to pick up nuts and bolts that fall into tight spots to pick out all the nesting.

Once that was all cleaned out I put one of these over it from Home Depot.

Also if you get a picker like I posted above - be careful not to go through the side of the ducting. It's just that foil stuff you see hooked up to dryers and the fingers can rip through - if you start pulling out insulation, you need to back off and try again.

I just hope we can reach them. I will try the compressed air....my brother has a compressor, and if they keep being irritating I might go that route. Otherwise I suppose the only other option is to disconnect the vent in the bathroom and force them out from there?

It's hard to know, but it sounds like they are closer to the bathroom end than the outside end. How can I know if there are chicks in there?

If you pull off the white cover and then the fan motor (which is on a hinge with a power cord) you'll see a little black flap - blast some air up there and the birds will probably leave. I don't know how old the chicks would be this time of year (I actually think we may have done this in July not June) and while they couldn't fly they could hop to the edge of the vent. I had fastened the vent bird cover loosely so they wouldn't fall to the ground - our vent was about 15' up - so I just climbed the ladder grabbed them and then put them onto the top of the electric meter in a box with some of their original nesting.

Don't forget to throw some gloves on - cute but filthy little things!

11 secret herbs and spices?

Actually....myself I would find a way to make sure they survive...which may mean letting them live there for a while I think a call to a pest control place could grant you some ideas. Maybe they can relocate the whole family?

And then cover it with wide screen mesh to prevent it from re-occurring.

They might also like the perfume. Why not go to Taco Time on Tuesday and fill up; then let nature run it's course. With the exhaust fan running; I'm sure they will want to move to a new home.

Holy coincidence Batman, we have had birds taking up residence in a vent just outside our bathroom at our condo. We called last year to have them removed, and the condo board did nothing. One of the birds ended up dying in there and the whole front of the condo smelt terrible.

This year, same thing (minus a dead bird)...except with a new condo board comes some decent results. Pest control just showed up, no more than 5 minutes ago.
