Team Previews:

Western boasts the top recruiting class in the nation which will surely spark excitement throughout the Western faithful. The Mustangs have added talent on both sides of the ball. They were able to add running back Tyler Varga who many considered the top in Canada. Defensively, the Mustangs added one of the top linemen in Daryl Waud and linebacker Byron Perez-Archambault from powerhouse Vanier College.

The team aims to continue their solid play stemming from last season’s playoff run. With veteran quarterback Donnie Marshall having a year under his belt as a starter, combined with a large group of veterans returning, the prospects are very exciting for the 2011 edition of the Western Mustangs.

Didn't realize Jerry Friesen had moved on to the CFL, great to hear. A complete class act in every respect.

Not much is certain as the University of Calgary Dinos prepare to defend their Canada West championship for the third straight season, but one thing is for sure: the 2011 campaign will not end at PEPS Stadium in Quebec City.

After winning Canada West’s Hardy Cup each of the last three seasons, the Dinos invariably headed to the Université Laval campus – for the Uteck Bowl in 2008 and the Vanier Cup in 2009 and 2010 – and all three times made the long journey back to the visitors’ locker room empty-handed.

In 2011 the Vanier Cup heads west, crossing the Rockies for the first time on its way to BC Place Stadium in Vancouver and Grey Cup weekend. The Dinos would dearly love to spend a late-November week in the Lower Mainland – but the road is an arduous one.

The team returns in 2011 without the services of eight former conference all-stars, seven of whom were also All-Canadians – including a two-time national MVP quarterback. Erik Glavic, Andrea Bonaventura, Anthony DesLauriers, and Aaron Ifield each exhausted their CIS eligibility last season, while Anthony Parker, Nathan Coehoorn, Paul Swiston, and Alex Krausnick-Groh each stuck with their respective Canadian Football League teams after Calgary’s outstanding showing in the CFL Draft in May.

The national rankings came out Tuesday and Calgary was pegged at No. 4 in the Football Reporters of Canada-CIS pre-season poll — a slot which Nill won’t argue.

The defending Vanier Cup champion Laval Rouge et Or are in their habitual No. 1 spot, receiving all 20 first-place votes after finishing undefeated in 2010. Following Laval are Western Ontario and McMaster.

The Dinos, three-time Canada West champs, are followed in the No. 5 and No. 6 placings by conference rivals Saskatchewan and Regina, respectively. Rounding out the top 10 are Montreal, Sherbrooke, Saint Mary’s and Laurier.

“Montreal is going to be tough; there’s some hype there with Danny Maciocia coming in,’’ Nill said.

In the 44th and final home opener at University Stadium (University of Manitoba campus) prior to a move into the new campus stadium next season, the Manitoba Bisons football team almost pulled off an upset but Calgary rallied for 18 consecutive fourth quarter points. The #4 ranked Calgary Dinos won a 35-31 squeaker on Saturday, September 3 to open the 2011 campaign for both teams.

The third-ranked University of Calgary Dinos finally emerged victorious over the Saskatchewan Huskies on home turf, dispatching the No. 7-ranked team in CIS back to Saskatoon with a 38-24 win Friday night at McMahon Stadium.

The win was Calgary’s first at home over the Huskies since Oct. 20, 2000, and it improves the Dinos to 4-0 on the season, assuring them of sole possession of first place heading into Week 5. The loss was the Huskies’ second straight, dropping them to 2-2 on the year.

The final score was not indicative of the play, as the Huskies were beneficiaries of two major plays on special teams that led directly to touchdowns. Calgary put up nearly 525 yards total offence while the Dinos defence held the Huskies to less than 200 total yards, giving the home side a significant time-of-possession edge. And, for the fourth straight game, the offence was led by a dominant performance along the ground.

The Dinos crushed the Golden Bears today, 61-7.
Quote:
Fifth-year running back Matt Walter set a pair of school rushing records as the third-ranked University of Calgary Dinos scored early and often in a 61-7 assault on the Alberta Golden Bears Sunday afternoon at McMahon Stadium.

Walter rushed for 178 yards to become the Dinos' all-time leading rusher with 3,788 yards, eclipsing Elio Geremia's (1983-87) mark of 3,784. He also scored three touchdowns on the day to move ahead of J.P. Izquierdo (1987-90) on the all-time rushing touchdowns list with 28. The victory improves Calgary to 5-0 on the season, their best start since 1984, and gives the Dinos a two-game cushion over the rest of the conference heading into the Thanksgiving bye. Alberta drops to 0-5 on the season.

The rushing performance put Walter into third place on the Canada West all-time rushing list and ninth in the CIS record book. He now sits 212 yards away from 4,000 in his career, a feat only eight other players in CIS history have accomplished. He also moved into a tie with Bryan Fryer (Alberta, 1972-75) in second place on the Canada West career all-purpose touchdowns list.

One of my best friends plays for the Dinos and it'll be his final year of competitive football. If they make it, I'm probably going to make the trip out to Vancouver for this. That'd be cool to see him get another shot at the Vanier and win it this time in his final game.

Dinos knock off the Huskies 20-8 tonight. First time in 11 years that Calgary sweeps Saskatchewan.

Not quite CIS football news, but in CJFL the Calgary Colts are playing the PFC final this weekend in Saskatoon against the Saskatoon Hilltops. I'll be going to the game since the field is literally one football field away from my house, hope to see the Colts win the PFC for the first time since 1990, and have a chance to go to Nationals.
