Default Parental Software for the PC

My CP homeslices,

Anyone have any good suggestions for software to block 'non-kid friendly' searches/websites. My neighbors kid is now at the stage where searching 'boobs' is awesome - minus all the pr0n pop ups that are happening because of it.

And an extra challenge, anyone know how to block said searches on a iPod touch?

Thanks!

Download a browser that blocks such searches (eg. K9 browser)
Enable restrictions on iPod touch
Disable Safari
Disable downloading apps
Make sure there aren't any other apps on iPod that can browse the internet (eg Google search)
Enable content restrictions in settings (age based)

For Windows: I suggest the Family Safety part of Windows Live Essentials. A couple of the other programs in their are useful, just make sure you only install what you need and don't install the bing bar!

Use OpenDNS.

Hahaha...true enough.

In all seriousness, I think OpenDNS is a good first step.

You do need to evaluate if it will impact other things you use at home though - for example, services that depend on DNS to do geo-location will have issues. People using OpenDNS (including me) have had rotten performance when streaming a movie from iTunes, for example, because based on your DNS, it looks like you're somewhere you're not, and the wrong content distribution server is selected for you.

Very sincerely... parent your kids. Rather than teach them to fear boobies. Explain the various concepts, and explain why they aren't ready for them yet... It's a far more constructive solution overall, and it sets them up better later on in adolescence. Think about it, what's worse than a horny teenager with no idea how to protect himself or his partner? That leads to a LOT worse discussions than 'why porn is for grown ups and not you'.

Your kid is currently at home, tugging it.

I jest, I actually agree with your comment to a certain extent, but there is a lot of stuff out there that I wouldn't feel comfortable with my young kids seeing.

I agree with the parenting comments. It isnt my kid and i love boobs, so I will continue to look at them. You can only beat the kid and take his crap away so many times until you try something else.

I'm 22 and, to my knowledge, do not have any offspring running around, so it's more for that reason that I'm terrified at the thought of him tugging it...

And while I agree that there is a lot of stuff out there that they don't need to be exposed to, who would you rather want your kid to learn about that stuff from? Other idiot kids at school who fill his head with misinformation, or you, when you have a measure of control as to how he's exposed to this sort of stuff *no pun intended*?

I just don't see the point of being scared of children; yes, childhood innocence is incredibly important and should be preserved. But if they're at the point where they're seeking it out on their own, that innocence is gone, and it's up to us as responsible parents to arm them with the proper knowledge of the situation, rather than slapping some parental filter on and saying 'pay no attention to the boobs behind the curtain'.
