You shouldn't need RipIt since a custom burned DVD of a skydiving trip won't have any CSS encryption like a commercial DVD.
Just use Handbrake to rip to MP4 and from there import to iMovie. You probably want to check that the decomb filter is set to auto, and rip to a nice large, high bandwidth preset like AppleTV2 or iPad, both of which will result in the best quality you can reasonably expect from a DVD source.
