Default Whats up with my internet connection?

We got our wireless set up last thursday and ive been having trouble connecting to it while downstairs.

It works for me upstairs fine and usually shows 5 bars while im downstairs.

My laptop is always close to the modem (which is upstairs) but for some reason its not working properly downstairs.

Other than a weak signal which might not be the case since you get 5 bars my next guess would be interference from other wireless networks in your area. Maybe play with your settings and manually try different channels.

Yea, theres lots of other wireless connections around me.

Would having the modem on top of a TV play in a part in anything?

When I move it off it seems to work better (not sure if thats a factor though)

Also when im in my room and I lose my connection, I hold it up in the air for a couple seconds and it usaully reconnects for a bit, haha.

Change to channel 1, or 11 and see if that helps. 6 is also normally good, it really depends on what people around you are using though.

Are you with Telus. They sent me a new router, and ever since, I've had the same problem. I've changed the channel too, but its hit or miss if its going to work WELL. Some nights its fine, others, not so much.

Maybe your tin foil hat is causing interference?

This may not apply at all, but my new laptop cant receive 5ghz band wireless, it can only connect to the lower band. I can still see my 5ghz signal, but it cant connect. Who knows, might help??

It might be a tumor.

Did you reboot your router? Which kind of wireless are you using (a/b/g/n)?

This happens when you have a laptop card that is 802.11a compatible, in an environment with 802.11n operating in mixed mode at 5Ghz. In mixed mode, 802.11n embeds data inside an 802.11a transmission, which your laptop can see, but doesn't know what to do with.

If you switched your 802.11n router to operate in n-only mode, I bet the laptop wouldn't see the 5Ghz signal anymore (and you'd break co-existence with any surrounding 802.11a AP's, but nobody uses 802.11a at home so it doesn't matter)
