I'm having an argument with some buddies who I occasionally play poker with. I've tried no-limit hold 'em and to me if was more fun and a superior all around game to limit. They want to stick with limit and don't appear willing to give no-limit a chance.
I'd be interested in hearing everyone's arguments for/against limit/no-limit.

i have never played limit. i must say i hate when people go "all-in" without anything in their hand when playing for minimal amounts per chip. there needs to be some financial pain to stop going all in whilly nilly.

I'm no expert, but as I understnd it:
There are different strategies to each game. No limit has bigger pots, but less hands played. Therefore you can fold a lot more than in limit, and hold out for a bigger hand. In limit you're foced to play your hands a lot more, or risk getting blinded out.
Ask Evman, he'll know.

A good No limit player will make more money than a good limit player.
Plus no limit is more fun to play. Limit basically just comes down to odds and percentages.

If you see a player go all-in all the time just wait until you get a great hand (AA, KK, QQ, AK) and call them. Losing all their money is great motivation to stop playing like that.

Yeah, but the beauty of that is you never know when to call or when not to. I called a guy who went all in that does it all the time, while I was holding a full house (KQ). I thought I had him schooled, until he rivered 4 aces. BEEEEEEAAAAAAAATS!!!!!!
I was sad. Very Sad.

I prefer limit.
What's the best style of poker when playing socially, with friends, where 'making money' is not the object?

With no limit you can win without the cards, you can win with a bluff. In limit, you can't.

The superior game is no-limit. The main event at the WSOP is a no-limit tourney, as are almost every WPT and PPT event. As mentioned already, there is almost limitless strategy involved in playing NLH, while LH can be reduced to simple math, at least at low levels.
If you're into making money at poker on the internet however, limit is probably a better option.

That's what it comes down to for me. I play limit games on the 'net and no-limit whenever I'm playing with buddies.

well in terms of playing with friends no limit would b much better then limt.. but playing at the casino unless your a very good no lmit players limit would b my choice simply cause no limmit tournies at most casino are hard to win simply because of all the players there and also that they can rebuy chips when they are low for a certain amount of time..and the blind structure will just eat all of your chips if you get low.. but 22 cash tournie if cheap if you want to try it out..limit can also get on your nerves since some players just call with bad hands and get lucky and beat your pocket aces like nothing. which can get on your nerves.. also on limit at casinos they have the BAD BEAT jackpot which is 20gs split between the table it someactually hits..which like the guy about mentioned "called a guy who went all in that does it all the time, while I was holding a full house (KQ). I thought I had him schooled, until he rivered 4 aces. BEEEEEEAAAAAAAATS!!!!!!"
this would b considered a badbeat which he would of hav gotten 5gs , the guy that beat him 10gs, and everyone at the table splits 5gs but i guess he was playing internet poker?

When I play with buddies, its NL
At the casino its Limit cause its easier to win money
I've played NL tourney's at the casino but besides it being fun, it is way too hard to win. Top 10 out of 110 gets cash prize and the 10th place prize is like only $50. I usually spend $42 -$62 at the tourneys

Gotta say NL....with buddies it's good because I find NL alot more fun and a lot less predictable.
I would play limit if I went to the casino, for the same reasons Albert mentioned, think it's easier to win money.

NL is definitely fun when playing with buddies and no one really cares in the end.
Saying that, when I play in the casino or on-line (especially Omaha) I always play pot limit - it's fantastic and the dollars still get up there.

Not usually a good strategy. Poker experts will tell you that the two most overated plays in poker are:
1-Bluffing
2-Slow playing
The best players don't do either too much, which is the reason they can pull it off when they do.

Yeah, I dont do it a lot...When I said "big time" i meant when I do do it, I am committed to doing it and will bet a large amount, and if the player calls after the flop, I will double it on the turn and double the bet on the river..........I represent that I got the best hand possible and a good percentage of the time, I get people to fold...............But dont get me wrong, I have been called many times and I have lost lots of cash with my bluffs
SLow Playing is just for idiots..............

There are different kinds of bluffing. My favorite is the reverse bluff. You know you have the hand won, and you try to maximize your winnings. So you have to think of the best way to draw people in. The main goal with this bluff is try to get an all-in, and double-up.
That's how I have success anyways, might not work for everyone.

No question NL. Simple reason: when you have the hand, you have the hand. If you go all in and someone else is silly enough to call you then you double your money right there. With limit you're restricted to whatever the bet is at. Can't win as much when you deserve it.
