Default Apple TV 2 Help

Picked up an ATV2 and am having some fun bouncing my iTunes library over to it.

I converted a bunch of .avi files to .mov files, which show up fine in iTunes, but will not show up on the ATV. Not totally unheard of, I know.

What I find weird though, is through iTunes, I can play the video file, then send it through iTunes to ATV and play it over my bigscreen.

Just curious if anyone has had this problem where ATV simply isn't reading this on its own.

How did you convert the files and what settings did you use?

It's generally better to convert files to M4V for ATV2.

I use MKVTools for repackaging (most of my files are already h264 and only sometimes need the audio re-encoded) and Handbrake for re-encoding video (in OSX).

If you're on a Mac there are several apps (ivi comes to mind) that will handle the entire process for you. It will convert your video, tag it and get it into iTunes. You can even set it to monitor a folder so you don't even need to lift a finger to start the process.

Used MPEG StreamClip and just 'saved as'. Saw something on another forum that suggested this as it was fast and worked quick.

Guess that might not be the case. Just found it strange I could send the movies from iTunes to ATV but ATV wont read them in the folder by themselves. Was hoping it was just some sort of cataloging issue.

So I guess I'll convert this thread to what free program should I use to convert files that doesn't take 2 hours per movie to accomplish?

There are a couple suggestions here:

Since you haven't mentioned what OS you're using it's hard to get into much more detail.

Re-encoding video is a CPU-intensive process - sometimes it's gonna take awhile. You shouldn't have to re-encode the video for most HD videos in MKV containers since it (usually) uses encoding that ATV2 understands as is, and you only have to put it in an M4V package to play it. It's common that you'll have to re-encode DTS or AC3 audio as AAC though.

If you download Handbrake, it has presets for all the apple devices and they all work well in my experience.

Jailbreak the ATV2, install XBMC, and then you won't have to go through the hassle of converting files.

Toying around with XBMC on the mac. If it's half as good for the ATV2, that's the way to go.

So I am having a problem with the ATV2 dropping the home library. Kind of makes the whole thing not as useful.

Anybody have this problem and is there a fix? I have the most current software.

Also, will the jailbreak fix this? Anybody that has done it have this problem?

Thanks.

I have never had a problem, it kinda takes care of it self which is one of the reasons I like it.

I would guess connectivity issues. Try moving your router, changing the channel on it, or plugging in a network cable to test.

I've had the problem with it dropping the home library as well. Usually if I restart itunes on the computer I'm using, or even a restart, that will do the trick. Kind of a pain though.
