Edmonton won't miss you, because it's a jerk. Calgary will love you because it's awesome.

I wonder how long it will take to get that smell off of you after 20 years?

Now I'm not going to lie. You have been behind enemy lines for a very long time. There is no real estimation to the amount of damage done in the last 20 years. I suggest a deep decompression period that begins on the QEII in Airdrie (30 min degreasing)
Haha seriously though. Awesome to hear. Just in time for Stampede!

So, since it's been 20 years since I have lived in Calgary, the wife and I are currently looking for a place to rent. Can those of you who have lived in Calgary for a while maybe point out neighbourhoods we should stay out of and does anyone know any good sites for rental places online that I could check out?

I'm afraid that you may have been institutionalized.
Stay away from ropes and beams until you establish yourself.
I'd stay in Forest Lawn to ease the transition, then move away when you feel comfortable that you don't need Edmonton anymore.

Do you have a preference for side of the city? Where will you be working?

I've lived in the SW all my time here, so I can only vouch for that. As south as Evergreen, as north as Kingsland. All have been great areas. Currently I live within walking distance to a train station, easy access to Macleod, very quiet area. Most of my friends live between Somerset (pretty far south) and Evergreen. They all love it.
The SE is very far from downtown, but is pretty self-sufficient. No train access though. I don't know much about living in the NW or NE, however. The NE does have a bad reputation.
I suppose the best option to start would be consider where you're working and find a place with that in mind.

That's a pretty inaccurate statement; parts of the SE are actually inside the downtown core.
Which is why using quadrants to make generalizations doesn't work anymore; the city is too big to split into just 4 parts.

The office is downtown, but I will be primarily working from home, so it doesn't really matter what the location is.
Does anyone know any good online sites for checking out available rentals?
