Default Looking for book recommendations on health and fitness

I like to think I am in pretty good shape and that I am fairly knowledgeable when it comes to health and fitness. But it is often a persons biggest mistake when they assume they know all there is to know.

Knowledge is power!

Anyone have any recommendations on something current invovling nutrition or health in general? Not looking for exercise books here but maybe something that I can read up on for myself and the GF that would further my knowledge on the topic?

Basically I have read a lot of different areas over the years, but nutrition and health is one I always neglect because I get that "Bah I know it all" smug attitude. I want to shed that and learn something.

Looking for men and women here.

Yes I love Mens Health and read it every month, I have gotten a lot of good information from that magazine over the years.

I even picked up their Nutition book and Big Book of Excercises. It was a nice description of exercises I have done for years but never really knew the science behind. I recommended both to anyone starting out or long term weight trainers.

Men's Journal is good too. Same makers of Men's Health, and more oriented to lifestyle stuff, but they usually have some little tips and recipies that aren't in men's health. The Abs Diet is a pretty interesting read too.

I picked up the Navy Seal Fitness book on itunes. It's a pretty good read. Very in depth, mind you.

Men's Health? Seriously? I can't stand reading that rag mag. It's one contradiction after another.

Page 23 - HOW TO LOW CARB YOUR WAY TO A SIX PACK
Page 28 - THE BEST WAY TO CARB UP BEFORE YOUR WORKOUT

Page 34 - CURL THIS WAY FOR MAMMOTH PYTHONS!
Page 39 - FORGET THE ISOLATION EXERCISES, CHIN UPS WILL GET YOU HUGE BICEPS

Maybe I'm missing something .... but it seems like a repetitive bunch of personal opinion pieces and 'bro-science' to me.

To answer the OP, I recently finished The Paleo Solution by Robb Wolf and quite enjoyed it. I'm not fully sold on the strict Paleo movement ... but I found the book well researched and written.

1. Walk distance to public library.
2. Take out book.
3. Walk home from public library.

Repeat as often as necessary.

Maybe two or three years ago, I picked up a book at Costco of all places--and of course I seem to have misplaced it so I don't have the name right ow, but I'm still looking--and it was an excellent book that focused on stretching.

Not only did it show you stretches you can do, it showed in incredibly detailed and easy to understand pictures exactly what muscles were being worked during each stretch.

Edit: Ah, not looking for exercise books, I see in your initial post now.
