I saw that headline and nearly sprained something rolling my eyes. I didn't even read the article yet and knew they were blowing up something completely insignificant.

Agreed. I find too much academic rhetoric can be suffocating and counter-productive at times, but hyperbolic anti-intellectualism is so much worse.

And this McCarthy-ism lite, too. Ignatieff is guilty of thought-crime, or, at best, naivete, for maybe referencing Mao during a political debate with the PM.

Personally, I felt his quote was in context, and didn't necessarily point to what Adler and "Bono" were insinuating. But WHO CARES!

Just think what would be said if the tables were turned. The left already calls Harper an autocrat, they would be eating this up.

Absolutely. There is some vile leftist stuff out there right now.

The populists are not alone in disrupting the civility of Canadian political discourse, they've got all the help they can get from just about every facet of society that values shrillness over calm.

That is the single most ridiculous reference. "Let flowers bloom" has NOTHING to do with Ignatief's political leanings

In fairness it's the Sun, anybody with half a brain knows not to rely on it for international and political news - I don't know how anybody working there has any self-respect as a journalist.

Disclaimer - aside from local Sports which is always solid.

I can't believe they have 30000 people following that site.

I'm sure looking back Ignatieff would regret picking that particular quote. Maybe he thought it would make him look more Harvard like.

I don't think that Ignatieff worships the cold dead preserved corpse of Mao, but if anyone has studied Mao or the history of China they probably would have reacted like I did, with a deep belly laugh followed by "That was stupid"

I wonder how Canada would have reacted with a George W Bush quote.
