The September issue of Budget Travel Magazine has a story on "Five Trips That Can Change Your Life" which I thought might be an interesting topic for the board.
For a life-altering event, aside from a night at Cowboys, where would you travel to?
The five trips Budget Travel suggested starting with the first destination. The other four are at links at the bottom of the page:

Yikes...although India may be neat to see I dont think Id put some place like that high on my list.
I just came back frm Panama and had an awesome time...the Panama Canal is awesome and had a wonderful journey thru a Rain Forest.
Crocs, large Sea Turtles, Snakes, Monkeys, 260 shades of green, etc etc etc....I highly recommend it!
Heres some pics....some of you may get a kick out of my Flames in Panama link...pics were taken right outside Manuel Noriega's old Beach house.

I've always wanted to retrace the path of Lewis and Clark, canoes, portages and all.
I'm a long way away from making that happen though.

Great shots Cheese. Flames jersey on the beach might have been a little warm but you took one for the team. I see you went by the famous Panamanian Burned-Out Slum which I hear is great this time of year.
Seriously though, looks like a fun trip.
As for the Dream Trips -- I hate to sound unadventurous but no thanks to India and specifically bathing in the Ganges. Maybe if I was up on my dysentery shots, but...
My dream trip would be to have lots of money and stay in one of those old family homes in England for a while. Well that's one of them. Beaches are fun too but I can get "beached out" fairly fast.
I'm a wimp.

I'd prefer retracing the steps of David Thompson if you want to go that route.

I'd love to see more of the world, but realistically my dream vacation would be hiking the West Coast Trail on Vancouver Island.
West Coast Trail
I think you'd learn more that a little about yourself along the way.

Wasn't the Appalachian Trail (area) the setting for Deliverance?

Eurail train trip around Europe: I did this for six weeks about 12 years ago and it is just an awesome experience. You can see so many world class sights within a sort span of time and meet some interesting people. My wife and I ended up going on a trip to Finland of all places because of another couple we met in Morocco. We are still friends with them.
Also, if you do it before you turn 26 it is way cheaper. I also did the train after turning 26 and it cost us a small fortune then as you could only travel first class on the pass after that age. Us old farts must just need more comfort I guess.......

As a (much) younger lad, I leaped on my bicycle and rode about 1200 miles through BC, Idaho, Montana and back into Alberta by my lonesome. Three weeks on $300 and not a nickel left at the end. Did it change my life? No, but definitely a surreal time and fortunately, I have pictures to re-live it by the by.
I'm thinking of a walk up Kiliminjaro before I'm too old.
After that, I can get a beer belly and a pony tail and curse people from my porch until I die.

Trans-siberian railway. It's probably life-changing at the best of times, but I know for a fact that it's life-changing when you're travelling by yourself and have absolutely no money when starting out from Mongolia.
I have a dream of doing some kayak trips in the arctic--either kayaking the mackenzie, or doing the Northwest Passage. Maybe not all at once.

"Word".
Though, having done quite a bit of long-trip hiking, I don't imagine I'll discover too much more about myself (except maybe my tolerance for being wet and unable to get dry). It's sort of a notch-in-the-belt thing for me. I'm planning to do it next summer some time if I can.

Been on the West Coast Trail here (did the entire thing) and if anyone needs some pointers on what to bring and what to read in preparation for the hike you can PM me. But I will say this, your feet will kill you by the end of the trip and you will have some very great memories.
p.s. if anyone is on a budget I can lend a couple of books out.

I think the trip that would most change a persons life is visiting their family roots.
For me, that means going to Odesa, Russia. Looking at where my family originated from would hold some meaning.

Auschwitz and Birkenau . i was just turning 21 when i went to visit these places, and the 2 hours i spent visiting changed me forever. Nothing will ever faze me again. When the girl i lived with for 3 years left, i smiled,my best friend in a casket i smiled. after seeing the place all i could think was " IT CAN ALWAYS BE WORSE!" As sick as it may sound this place is something everyone should see. After visiting this hell hole i realized one thing, life is short, enjoy every minute of it cause we all end up in the same place....... six feet deep. Honestly i have had a smile on my face since i visited the place, septemer 11, 2001 just as the second plane hit the tower.......life is too short, dont waste it!
{sorry about the grammer im frickin sleepy}
