Default Vulture at the feast

If you have seen any wildlife show for more than a few times you would have eventually seen the spectacle when vultures arriving to feed. Occasionally, they would be chased off by lions or hyenas but eventually they would feed. A unsettling but necessary part of the circle of life

After the Haitian earthquake there was looting. Go figure. Already grounded under by poverty, they now must survive a earthquake that devastated their island. Looting is punishable by death, even in Canada. Fabienne Cherisma WAS a 15 year old girl who was shot in the head while trying to loot after the Haitian earthquake.

Look at the picture.

Left to die alone in a cold unfeeling environ. Horrible isn't it? This sorrowful picture won the photographer an award.

It's the photojournalist's job to document events that happen in the world, no matter how tragic. That's what people want to see, and it's become a very competitive business. As a result, it's not surprising to see a group trying to get a shot which is obviously fodder for awards, which leads to credibility, and ultimately more work. The vulture analogy is apt, only in that they need to take advantage of death for their own survival.

I think it is a nice example of how good photographers can capture an image that is powerful but not necessarily representative of the situation.

I think more disturbing than the photojournalists taking the pictures is that from the looks of the suroundings in the 2nd photo, it isn't some desolate area. Many ordinary Haitians probably walked around her before the photographers got there.
