Scouts Canada redesigns its uniforms
Quote:
Scouts Canada reveals its first uniform redesign in more than 20 years on Friday, hiring clothing company Joe Fresh to bring the century-old organization into the modern era. The new uniform swaps the traditional beige and green stiff cotton digs for a splash of colour and a touch of fleece. Among the most sensational of the uniform changes, the Scouts have done away with their iconic sash.

As a parent and as a Beaver & Cubs leader, I can't say that I'm all that impressed with the new uniforms. I think they threw away too much tradition with losing the sash, and instead of a uniform it has turned into just an activity outfit. My older son, a second year Cub, doesn't like it. Sure there are still badges, but now they're sewing them on the arm instead - I can see a logistical nightmare coming when the kids outgrow their shirts and all badges have to be redone...
Has Scouts Canada gone too far?

I'm purely going on looks here, but I think it's an improvement. The old ones seem too busy, and too formal too. I can see why the sewing thing would suck for parents though.

The new ones look like something a North Korean would wear.

I'm not a fan of the scouts but those are an abomination. The old ones were fine.
If they did this to get more modern and attract more people it isn't going to work. I can assure you the uniforms isn't the reason scouts aren't more popular.

I think this is foolish. I was in the scouting movement for over 10 years, and the sash was always one of the things we took the most pride in. When you moved up a level, or filled up your sash (I did twice), it would go directly onto a campfire blanket.
Where do the badges go when one runs out of room on the arms? If their arguement is that the sash is uncomfortable, I can't imagine that badges sewn all up and down the arms will be that comfortable either. Plus, with the sash it was easy to give important badges (like the 6 stars for Cubs, Religion in Life, Language Strip, etc at the top, and service stripes at the bottom) a prominent placement, which you won't be able to do as easily with them sewn on the sleeves,
These new uniforms sound far too casual. Because the uniforms of the past were always a bit formal, we had a certain respect for them, and I believe it influenced one's behavior while wearing the uniform as well.
I don't even want to see what the new badges by Joe Fresh look like.

Yeah I don't really understand the need to scrap the sash. There were some kids with over 50 badges on theirs and took pride wearing them, so I'm not sure what the plan is.

The organization is going nowhere. Time to blow it up and start over.

I couldn't help but read the clothing description in the voice of Bonnie Brooks, president of the Bay.

Those old uniforms not only look way better, but they look like they'd do a much better job of making the kids feel like they belong to something bigger than themselves. Strange change to make.

maybe cost of uniform was higher and they found it was an obstacle for enrollment being down..seems like a bad change to me though

THEY ALSO SELL METAL FILLED POPCORN!
As a former member of Scouts Canada i am quite disappointed, and
Is it me or do the new uniforms make them look kind of cheap.
Like they work for PETA or something and they live in the trees?!?

Actually, the Cub shirt isn't that dissimilar to the jersey-knit shirt worn in the '70s.
Although likely in a lighter, more breathable fabric.
