They have tallied it up and it appears as though Cowperson has in fact been declaired the pope.
KevanGuy just couldn't pull it off even with his promise to eat obscene amounts of wendy's

Saw this about 10 minutes ago under 'Breaking News' on CNN, but I didn't want the same thing to happen to me again (the news getting pulled before it was confirmed).
That was a pretty fast result when you need a 2/3rds majority to vote in a new pope

CNN saying Germany's Joseph Ratzinger is the new Pope.
A noted conservative. Don't look for any shifts away from the hardline policies.

In all seriousness, I remember reading/hearing that they were going to try to have an older Pope to, for lack of a better phrase, generate more turnover.

Too bad. If the Catholics need something, it's a push to "modernize" (for lack of a better word) their policies. Start with female priests, etc, and let the poor buggers get married.

Cardinal Ratzinger was a former member of the Hitler Youth. So he's got that going for him too.

Ya but he just had to say 10 hail Mary's and all was forgiven.

If you were a child in Germany during that time you would have been a Nazi Youth as well.

It's hard to hold something against someone for something they did when they were a kid. I mean, when he was 10 or 12, did he fully understand what was going on? Did he have a choice? My parents made me join army cadets and it certainly wasn't my choice. I would hate to have someone hold it against me now that I am an adult.

When I said: "Betcha it's gonna be that uber-conservative German cardinal"... I didn't really want to _win_ that bet.
Have also just received a message from a friend born, raised & living in Germany, which I post here:

I don't know...
As I said, there were people who stood up for what was right and paid the price for it.
This guy was 18 in 1945, old enough to know what was going on.

Amen! If you're not willing to defy a brutal dictatorial regime as a teenager, what use are you?
And come on.... Germans=Nazis! We all know it!
Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go finish off the shrine to my own greatness that I've been building.

In 1945 he was 18, but in what years was he part of the Hitler Youth? I think the Hitler Youth started before WWII.

That was a really fast election. But the new pope looks good, even though he is old. I am not a catholic, but I am excited they have a new pope, and it's been a while since there has been a German pope.
Maybe his age and ethnicity are a reason why he was elected... the church has been branching out all over the world but maybe didn't think it was yet time to have a non-european pope YET. Maybe next time. That is why Benedict XVI is an excellent choice.
