Default Malone Joins the Jackets

This time the Dallas Stars came knocking and GM Penney answered the shed door. Penney was presented with an offer and after 5 minutes of looking it over and thinking about it, he decided to accept.

To Columbus:
Ryan Malone
Wayne Simmonds
2011 1st(nyi)

To Dallas:
David Krejci
David Steckel

Penney had this to say about the deal:
Quote:
We take a 1OV hit but add Simmonds and a 1st. We feel Malone can step in and play some quality minutes on the 2nd line but the added depth of Simmonds will also help us in the long run. We also added a nice 1st round pick in the process. We had no plans to offer Steckel an extension and he has not even played a game for the Jackets yet.

Thanks Dave for the very quick talks.

This deal was all about the future for me. Krejci has the potential to be a PPG player by the time he is 25 and is versatile enough to play both wing and center. He is a nice addition to my youth-core of Neal, Hornqvist, Yandle and Weiss (not really that young).
You have to give to get and in this deal that was the case. Malone never really fit that well on my team and is a depreciating asset in my eyes. Simmonds, while he is young and still has a lot of potential, I don’t see him evolving into a consistent top 6 player any time soon.

In my eyes I gave up a 2nd and 3rd line player plus a solid pick in a marginal draft for a young top line player. Probably some risk of over payment on this deal depending on how Krejci continues to develop (or doesn’t) but I’m comfortable with that risk.

I think Krejci will be fine and he is the real deal and pretty underrated overall. However, with the current group of youth I have, I would rather trade Krejci than guys like Nash, Stastny, Stewart, and Oshie.
