I had to change a battery in a sensor recently in my parent's Chubb system (old people just can't do it) and it was a rather tricky operation. I had to make at least 10 phone calls because every time I'd talk to someone they'd tell me something different.
It went a little like this... I called them up
RougeUnderoos: "I've got a dead battery in the system somewhere".
Service Person 1: "What does it say when you push the status button".
RougeUnderoos: "Sensor 8-9 battery dead"
SP1: "You've got a dead battery"
RU: "Yeah, I kind figured.... so which one is it"
SP1: "Sensor 8-9"
RU: "Yeah, but where 8-9, these things are all over the house, and it's not on the list"
SP1: "Don't know. You'll have to phone during the week to figure that out. Just turn it off".
RU: "Goodbye".
Then like 20 minutes later some other guy phones the house...
Service Person 2: "You know you have a dead battery in your system?".
RU: "Uh, yeah".
SP2: "What does it say when you press the status button"?
RU: "Sensor 8-9 battery dead".
SP2: "That's just a generic code for a dead battery. Which sensor is it"?
RU: "I don't know, they told me to phone on Monday".
SP2: "That's right".
RU: "Thanks for your help".
It went on and on and on. Finally I figured out which one was out (even on Monday they weren't able to figure that out for me) and changed it myself after an interesting conversation with the service guy on the phone.
Service Guy: "So you know where the dead battery is"?
RU: "Yep. Second keypad, not a sensor".
SG: "Nope, it's in the basement".
RU: "No, I'm pretty sure this is it"
SG: "How do you know".
RU: "Because it doesn't work. Push the buttons it doesn't make a noise, nothing"
SG: "Yep, that's the one"
RU: "So now what"?
SG: "Take it off the wall. You see that little tab on the bottom? Pull that and at the same time, push up"
RU: "It's not coming off".
SG: "Are you pulling the little tab"?
RU: "Yep"
SG: "And pushing up"
RU: "Yep"
SG: "Are you sure you are pushing the little tab"?
RU: "Pushing? You said pull"
SG: "No, push"
And the rest is history.
Holy smokes I have too much time on my hands to type all that.
They've had the system for 8 years and not a single complaint from the old geezers about the service. Had the fire department out once or twice but other than that it's been tip top until I had to change the battery, which really wasn't a big deal at all.
If I asked him, my old man would say Chubb is pretty good I think, so if you trust my old man...
