The first episode was on this last Friday, for those of you not aware you can get to watching it immediately for your desperately needed fill of blood, nudity and some xena lesbo action.
The storyline this time around shows the rise of the house of Batiatus from his meager beginning and brings back a lot of the original cast.

Wait, wasnt "blood and sand" about that? They arent building on last year just re-doing it to get the violence and nudity ratings?

Andy Whitfield, who starred as Spartacus, was diagnosed with Stage 1 non-Hodgkin lymphoma after the first season, so season 2 was delayed so he could get treatment. Gods of the Arena was shot as a prequel to fill time until season 2.
Unfortunately, Whitfield's cancer came back, so season 2 is going to be filmed without him if it does go ahead.

Spartacus was re-cast. Spartacus is now:

As an opening chapter to the prequel mini series I think it did pretty good at introducing a good amount of players and setting the tone for the series. And I think I'll enjoy watching characters who's fates I know find their place in that society.
Anyways I don't expect the gore and nudity to persist at that level over the next 5 episodes. This is the bait, the story should be the trap.

Yeah, I knew it was on tomorrow, but the OP said it was last Friday and I got a little pissed of for a sec.
I'm personally a little skeptical about this season and the rest of the series as a whole. I just think the first season was such a cool novelty show that it might have jumped the shark by now. How much more bad effects and over acting can I stand in the name of blood and tits??
Here's more on the new guy who will play Spartacus in Season 2 of Blood and Sand. Apparently Andy Whitfield told the producers that he wanted them to go ahead and continue the show.

I hope I'm wrong, I really do.
The bad effects are what I find this show gives it its own identity. Sure they aren't the greatest but IMO they work for this type of over-stylized show. I have never really had a problem with the acting in the series.
My problem with the prequel initially was the main gladiator (as Spartacus was so great - that's my beef with season 2, hopefully the replacement can fill in properly), and after 1 episode I really like the main gladiator, Gannicus.
Sorry, I'm not fully understanding. Can I watch this show coming in as a new viewer and understand what's goin on? I watched the first 5 mins of the show in the link Otto-Matic provided and I REALLY want to watch. Appropriate amount of blood, guts and full frontal nudity. Don't really need to see pee pee's but fair is fair I guess, ladies need their fix too.

It's a prequel to the first season, so technically, they're introducing all the characters -- but in reality, like most prequels, I'm sure they're going to use what people already know about the characters in building the story.
It's probably one of those things where if you know what their relationships will become, some of the things they say and do in the prequel will have more meaning, but you'll still likely be able to enjoy it.
The first season is only 13 episodes, and this prequel is only going to be 6, so you could easily go out and find the first season and record the prequels and be done watching the whole thing relatively quickly.

Yeah, this is a prequel series, it explains how everyone got to where they were in Season 1 of Blood and Sand.
So it is a totally new story, so you won't need to see Blood and Sand, but for example, when they showed Crixus as a slave it was kind of cool to see how Batiatus got him, as he was the current champion of Capua in Blood and Sand.
But you shouldn't "miss" anything as the story isn't a continuation.

Fair enough, but at the end of the day, this is a guilty pleasure show. Nothing more, but damn, just finished watching Episode One....that was a lot of fun. Love seeing a lot of those old faces.
Don't like Lila from Dexter being in this season and something tells me that she's going to be a major character. Her smile drives me insane. Oh well, I'll get over it.
The first two episodes have been fantastic so far. The production quality seems to be higher this season as well. Looks like Starz threw more money at it this time around.
I've come to really like this show (the ultimate man show), but man...after watching the first season and now the first two episodes of the prequel....is the speech of the characters driving everyone else crazy like it is me?
Either I was focusing on other things during the first season (got sucked in by the blonde roman girl, then into the story of spartacus) or it was not as bad as it is now, but it seems like everyone deliberately destroys the english language in an attempt to make it sound formal and ancient.
My technical grasp on the english language is not amazingly strong, so it is hard to describe how they are butchering it...just a little irritated at times with the speech of some characters.

I hear what you're saying, but I actually like those little sayings. "The words fall from his mouth, like %$&* from ass." Brilliant! Or "spread cheek and receive deeper ramming." Some of those lines are golden.
