Calgary elects to remove fluoride from our water!!!!

Calgary city council has voted 10-3 in favour of removing fluoride from the city's drinking water.
Two members of council, Mayor Naheed Nenshi and Ald. Brian Pincott, were out of town during Tuesday's vote.
Earlier in the day, city council considered and rejected by a vote of 8-5 putting the fluoride issue to a plebiscite during the 2013 municipal election. Council also rejected the idea of referring the matter to an expert panel.
The issue has proved a lightning rod for Calgarians, and past plebiscites have revealed public opinion is nearly even split in on the matter.
In 1989, 53 per cent of Calgarians voted in favour of adding fluoride. Two years later, it was added.

would personally be much more comfortable with an expert panel opinion than that of our esteemed council when it comes to public health issues. i am not convinced they are appropriately trained in assessing scientific literature on this matter.

I feel for the kids if they have to starting using those horrible little packages of fluoride once a week in school like them made us back in the late 80's and early 90's. I still have to use the foam style at the dentist because the smell of that crap makes me ill.

I'm assuming you mean condemn .... no high fives from me ... I am greatly anticipating the number of bombed out mouths I will get to see in the preteen age group in about 6 years, I will be so excited to see those.

There is a stat that just under 20 percent of operating room time at the ACH is used for dental rehabilitation .... that is a ridiculous stat that will get worse.

Did they allocate a bit of money to actually keep track of dental health to see if this decision has any impact?

This is extremely hard to track because the population that will be affected the most (lower class kids) don't see the dentist on a regular basis.
Fluorosis is the main issue people have with fluoridated water .... IMO this will become a much bigger problem since we will now have to go back to home supplements which are much more difficult to dose.

My family Dentist said he's seen the number of cavities go down significantly ever since they've put Fluoride in water. Told me he doesn't understand why they're doing this but all politics I suppose. But that's only one opinion...

That stuff is nasty, I even gave my cat bottled water when living there.

Really? Calgary has some of the cleanest water in the world I've heard.

Maybe, you could be right. I just remember hearing Calgary had very clean water, and I don't mind the taste. The only bottled water I like is the no name stuff from Wal-Mart (which probably comes from a tap) That stuff just tastes great. Fiji brand also has a good taste to it, but it's like $3.50 for a litre. All the other stuff I can't stand.
