Detroit Citizens Raise money for Statue of Civic Son
The people of Detroit raised $50K to help pay for a Statue of one of Detroit's favourite sons.....
Quote:
Residents of Detroit have raised more than $50,000 to build a statue of one of the city's favourite sons - Robocop. Robocop spawned three movies and a TV series
The idea of of celebrating the character from the popular movie trilogy was sparked by a tweet directed at Detroit mayor Dave Bing.
"Philadelphia has a a statue of Rocky, Robocop would kick Rocky's butt. He's a great ambassador for Detroit," MT tweeted.

I cant make stuff like this up. You'd think the people of Detroit have bigger things to worry about than spending money on a Robocop statue.
That said, I think its an awesome although hilariously flawed idea. Granted, it will bring in some tourism to Detroit maybe, but I dont think anyone's travel plans are in any way going to be seriously affected by this.
- "Hey honey, should we go to Hawaii on Holiday?"
- "That sounds nice and all, but I really want to go and see that statue of Robocop, so Detroit it is!"

Yeah, that's so hilariously misguided. Are they trying to point out how weirdly prophetic the robocop movies were, predicting a Detroit on the verge of financial collapse, riddled with crime, and home to corrupt corporations? Why don't they just turn the vast, abandoned parts of the city into a Robocop theme park, and create jobs by paying people to pose as street gangs? Hey, disutopian future adventure tourism could be the next big thing!

I'm pretty pumped about this, will definitely be checking it out at some point as I wind up in Detroit at least once a year to catch college football games.
It does seem like a waste of money in Detroit, but I read a couple of articles that talked about how it was acting as a sort of catalyst to incresed awareness of art and culture in the city, and not just of the robocop variety. Not sure that I buy that, but $50k wasn't going to make much of an impact anywhere else, so why not a giant freakin Robocop? I'll take potholed streets if I get Robocop.

$50,000 for a Robocop statue that might make some people that would only skirt the suburbs of that place go in to the city itself.
It'll make that money back, that's for sure.

No doubt, but obviously $50K isnt going to pay for the whole thing, thats just how much the residents have shelled out.

People that say "they should have spent that $50,000 on things that actually help people" need to remember one thing:
-these people donated $50,000 to have a Robocop statue.
Edit: Also, this is awesome.

Granted. Thats fair, I just figured that people in Detroit should be saving their money being one of the hardest hit cities in America.
It is awesome though.
I want it to be gigantic.

It would be better if the statue said "Bitches, leave"

That's more money than the city itself actually has to its name - kudos to the citizens of Detroit.
