I dunno about you, but it feels to me like the internet just got started. Most of us have probably been surfing the web on a regular basis for about 5 years now, perhaps even as many as 8 or so....and now all of a sudden there's an Internet 2?!
Who Else Knew About This?
I heard this on the radio today. Supposedly it's 10,000 times faster than standard DSL. Yes, TEN-THOUSAND times. I heard that someone on the network was able to download a high-quality movie in 30 seconds -- a feat that usually takes people with "regular" Cable or DSL modems at least a few hours, if not a few days.
It seems this Internet "2" though is restricted to organizations only, primarily universities around the U.S. as well as many government industries.

The copyright on the bottom of the page says "1996-2005", and it is possible that the idea or concept was first thought of at that point, but I find it kind of hard to believe, considering the internet "1" pretty much went mainstream public in 1995...

I heard about this a few days ago because I guess the RIAA is going after a bunch of college students for trading music on Internet 2.
I read that they tested a full length dvd movie and it took 5 seconds or some very small amount of time to transfer.
Interesting stuff and I'm not even a techie.

I think it's been 10 for me. Back in the day I believe you had to click "save smut to disk" and then open it up manually. Things were pretty slow on a dial-up at 75mhz. It depends on your needs, peccadilloes and location of course, but in those days you could probably walk to Mac's and buy a porno mag in less time than it took to download sufficient amounts of immorality and wickedness.
It was the stone age, that's for sure. If Patricia Ford didn't exist I'd probably still be using a typewriter.

Internet2 concept has been around since 1995 actually. 34 Universities started the project in Oct 1996.
The Internet has been around in one form or another since 1969. It adopted TCP/IP and became the basis for the modern Internet in 1983. The first commercial dialup provider appeared in 1990, also about that time the first web site was put up. By 1992 there were over 1 million devices on the Internet.

Internet 2 as far as I can tell is simply a change in protocol.
Current day broadband transmission mediums already allow 10 times faster transmissions (like your cable internet) but they aren't just being utilized..

While Internet2 does run on IPv6 (the Internet runs on IPv4), the primary differences are the huge speeds (far more than 10 times faster) and that it's a private network. You can't just subscribe to it, you have to apply to join.
They will eventually switch over the Internet to IPv6 as well; more and more new devices and software are provisioned for IPv6, they just have to enable it.

ah, yes. I remember when my dad got Freenet back around 94 or so...text-based internet, searching for porn the hardway, never knowing what you'd get. good times.
I was pretty big into BBS's as well back then, haha. remember those?

Yes, of course the internet has been around since 1969...but I'm saying it first went maintstream into most households in the U.S. (sorry, that's where I live) around 1995.
I wasn't posting this for a lecture on the history of the internet and networks, both LAN and WAN alike, rather I just was wondering if anyone else had heard about this.
It's true the RIAA are after a few people who have taken advantage of the Internet 2's high speeds. And it is true that they downloaded a full-lenght high-quality movie, but I heard it took about 30 seconds, whereas it would take any regular cable or DSL user anywhere from a few hours to a few days to complete such a task.

Sorry, I was posting in response to "if anyone else had heard about this" that I had back in '95 and thought providing a bit of detail would have been interesting for those who were curious. I'm not sure why that offended you.
Internet2's data transfer rates can be insane.. they can actually transfer a full length DVD movie in 3 seconds on some segments! Filesharing gone wild!

Sorry, didn't mean to be so defensive. I guess I just thought that since I was the topic-starter, that post was more so directed at me than any of the other couple of people that had posted in this thread at the time.
No worries.
