Well, that was a tough, tough series. Thank god for Martin Broduer because if I still had Vokun in net I'm sure this one would be going to game 7 too. Congrats to the Jackets on playing a tough series, and I'm counting my luckey stars that it wasn't my team that suffered the unforseen round one upset.
Crazy series on this side, Avs get hot at the right time and take out the team many thought would win it all. Phoenix takes out the CPHL's most experienced squad and perrenial conference finalist Calgary. The Wild push the Preds to game 7, and could have possibly won this one by now. I'll be interested to see how that one finishes up tommorrow.
The blog will be updated later to show my game report.

Well, the injuries sure didn't help... we were poised for an upset after game 4, but any team losing its best defensive defenseman and 3rd line PK specialist against a team as good as the Oilers had no hope.

COYOTES WIN ROUND 1!
Associated Press
CALGARY -- The Phoenix Coyotes have moved on to round 2.
In a wild 5-4 win over the Calgary Flames, the Coyotes took the series 4 games to 2 on Wednesday.
The first period was crazy with four goals being scored in the first 5 minutes of the game. The first was a marker by Keith Tkachuk only 13 seconds into the game. The second came quickly as well, only 21 seconds later Daniel Briere scored. Then the Flames potted one at 2:50 of the first period. That was followed shortly with a goal by Tim Taylor at 4:33. At that point the score was 3-1, only 4:33 into the game. Before the period was done however, the Flames would pot two more goals to even the score at the 1st intermission.
Early in the second period, 1:23, the Flames scored once more to claim their only lead of the game. However, only 7 minutes later the Coyotes tied it up once more on a goal by Yannick Tremblay.
The game was then tied for 28 minutes until Chris Simon scored on the powerplay with only 3:08 remaining in the game. That put the Coyotes over the edge and into the second round.
The Coyotes outshot the Flames 41-26 and overall played a good game.
1 - Keith Tkachuk (COY)
2 - Tim Taylor (COY)

Avs serve up goose egg to smothered ducks
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeah baby!!
The Colorado Avalanche completed one of the biggest shocks in CPHL history today by dumping the Ducks out of the playoffs in 6 games. In a series that had went blow for blow with the Ducks winning to tie the series the trend was finally bucked tonight as the Ducks had no answer to a legendary Avs performance.
The pre-series talk of the Ducks firepower rarel surfaced in this series and was totally put to bed tonight by being frozen out completely on Colorado's home ice. A final score of 3-0 clinched the series and sparked wild scenes in the fizzing Pepsi Centre.
All the action happened in a 2nd period that was sandwiched between a 1st period of tentative hockey and a 3rd period of the Ducks admitting their fate. In the decisive second stanza the Avs tallied all three of their goals in less than 10 minutes. First up was arguably the Avs layer of the series Rob Neidermayer! Sedin and Gauthier supplied him with his 4th of the post-season after 4:44 of the 2nd. Seven minutes later the resurgent Rob turned provider along with Sedin again to allow Grosek to score his first of the series and give the Avs a huge 2-0 lead.
The Ducks were reeling but were given a huge ooportunity to haul themselves back in to it with a powerplay on account of a double minor to Berg fro some dubious stickwork. So, 4 minutes for the Ducks on the PP, surely a goal would come? It did. For the Avs. A heartbreaker for the Ducks as Yushkevich took a sweet pass from Game 5 hero Nylander to roof the puck past a shell-shocked Legace.
The Ducks will no doubt be furious at bwing out with such a whimper. No goals and just 21 shots against a team they were hotly tipped to sweep or see off in 5 was not how this series was meant to go. Indeed when they need their much flaunted offense the most in the 3rd period they managed just 3 shots as Turek coasted to a shut-out.
GM Abstract said "This is a sweet sweet moment and we're all gonna enjoy it and worry about Round 2 later. Nobody gave us a hope." The victorious GM continued with some words about his opposition GM. "Drunk is a great guy and a great GM and certainly deserved his award as 1st year GM of the year. He'll be gutted at the loss but can take a lot of heart and pride from how he conducted himself throughout the series. On the other hand maybe Luongo (benched for game 6) should worry more about saving pucks than giving away cars."

Way to go Wild! I have to go with the underdogs as this would be a HUGE upset. Good job to the Flames, Ducks and Jackets. All three teams could of just as easily won there series with the players they have on there roster. Good luck the rest of the way to the teams that advanced.

Hasek's on again and off again performance remained consistent has he let in 4 goals in only 26 shots. If the trend continues then Hasek will come up with a huge game 7. We can only pray.
The terrible PK didn't help matters.
Goalie Statistics
Dominic Hasek (PRE), 22 saves out of 26 shots, L, 3-3-0
Tomas Vokoun (WIL), 31 saves out of 33 shots, W, 3-3-0
Power Play Conversions
PREDATORS 0 for 3
WILD 2 for 2
Game Stars
1 - Tomas Vokoun (WIL)
2 - Geoff Sanderson (PRE)

Ducks lay an egg in games 5 & 6!
GM Drunk is quite furious at his team. "We need to step it up in game 6, we had our backs against the wall, but instead of fighting back our guys sat down and took a siesta! Being shutout as a way out of the post season is not acceptable." Manny for the most part did what he could, Roberto showed that he is not ready for playoff hockey yet." I am still happy with this squad, we were fighting for a playoff spot at Christmas, then we turned it up and became a powerhouse for the rest of regular season, but it just wasn't meant to be this year. I tip my hat to the Avalanche they played a great series"
Patrick Elias did what was expected of him (except being shutout in the last 2 games) scoring 9 points in the first 4 games. Oleg Kvasha lifted a few eyebrows with 4 goals from his 3rd line duty (even getting a PP goal although he is not on a PP line).
There are rumours floating that Roberto is so upset with his performance (or lack there of) that he will be holding a rally wherein he will part with the rest of his Camaro collection and shave his head. Stay tuned.
Good luck to the rest of the teams moving on to round 2.
P.S. - GO WILD GO in game 7 (if you knock out Nashville then at least were not the biggest upset team) now that I said that the Preds will win.......dammit!

Oilers blog is updated with todays game story. Again congrats to Niall and the Avs for the big upset. You made a bold move getting Niedermeyer to bolster your second line and that ultimately helped you out big time. Congrats to Eric for knocking out another rival of mine, although it would have been good to see three Martin teams in the final 4 on our side. I'll be interested to see what happens in Calgary in the offseason, all I know is that there will be a lot of change there. Still I think it's fair to say that he wins that big 12 player deal that took place between the two teams. I remember being ticked that the Flames had grabbed a top end goalie and diidn't have to move Gonchar to do it. But it was Biron who in fact played better. I look forward to tommorrows tilt with Minnesota and Nashville. This Wild team actually remind me a bit of the NHL Wild from two years ago when they took out Colorado. Can Brendan Morrow make himself into a legend tommorrow, or will the Wild end up being nothing more than a major stress causer for the Mighty Preds.
