Quick question - can pending UFAs currently be renegotiating with their current teams or are any players that are pending UFAs at this point automatically going to become UFAs on July 1?

As I understand it, players become UFA as of July 1....if you want to prevent that from occuring, you need to talk to the agents...and make sure they get back to you in a timely fashion.

Any player on your roster can be negotiated. As the contracts don't lose a year till July 1st. Of course the agents may not want to negotiate....

I hope they don't. lol. There is already a very limited UFA crop. I would suspect that any UFA that comes available would demand a ton of coin. There are a number of teams with a lot of cap and few players to go after. (hint hint agents).

The hits just keep on coming. First Comrie, now this -- an almost universally respected GM says "UFAs are going to cash in".
What a time to be alive!

Joking aside though, sign him now and you end up loosing a year off his term.... Oh I'll sign you and give you "X" million for for two months that you won't even play a game for me.
I have a few guys I would like to sign but.... Loose a year for nothing, all to gain for the agents. Plus I've been told already to wait till the ofseason with some players.
Give us a 4 year deal to cover these two months and you'll see me making more calls, otherwise I'm just esculating salaries.

but, as far as UFAs go, sign him now and you lose a year off his contract, but sign him later and anyone has the opportunity to beat your offer and take your player, escalating salaries even more.

I understand what you're saying but why should I pay a player a full years salary for nothing... when in fact I've already paid him a salary for that season too.
That's like Kip Miller saying to me, I'll sign with the Hurricanes if you pay me "X" million for 2 seasons plus i want a "X" million signing bonus. Because after all, signing a player for 3 seasons you only end up getting him for two and doubled paid for the current season (A mighty fine grab for the agent and his player and the expence of us GM's)

you have a good point that may be worth looking into. As it stands right now, you could always offer a tiered contract, with the first year at their current salary and the next two bumped. Effectively a two-year contract starting next year

Negotiate an extension in July, or October or some time you and the agent agree upon.
Just have to hope the agent is still here, and so are you LOL
