Default Education As Felony

Incredible story out of Ohio, where single mom Kelley Williams-Bolar was jailed and slapped with a felony conviction for lying to school officials to get her kids into the better school in their father's school district.

While she did break the law, and there have to be consequences for that, a felony conviction seems a bit harsh - particularly since the judge knew that it would mean the end of the career she was training for and presumably ongoing poverty for her and her kids (and in fact the article implies the judge considered that to be part of the punishment).

The woman should be given a medal for trying to put her children in a better situation.

That's a pretty shoddy description, are there any articles that expand it?

"Education as a Felony" is an inflammatory and misleading title.

I just spent 20 minutes reading stuff about this lady and I have no clue what it is a jury found she did wrong. Maybe it's just me, but it would be nice to read an article that actually describes what the court case was about instead of a bunch of sob stories about a mother doing what she had to to get her kids an education.

I know of a, uh friend whose mom forged papers so her son would go to a better school outside of the allocated district. I didn't think it was such a big deal. I mean... preventing education is one thing, but attempting to ensure a brighter future? That does not deserve to be a felony despite some minor fraud...
