Default Muslim families demand children be exempt from music class, want segregated phys-ed

And shockingly the government caves to their demands.

Quote:
About one dozen families who recently immigrated to Canada are demanding that the Louis Riel School Division in Winnipeg excuse their children from music and coed physical education programs for religious reasons.

The families believe music is un-Islamic -just like the Taliban believe and then imposed on the entire population of Afghanistan -and that physical education classes should be segregated by gender even in the elementary years.

Officials say they may try to have the Muslim children do a writing project on music to satisfy the curriculum's requirements. The school officials have apparently consulted the Manitoba Human Rights Commission, and they have also spoken to a member of the Islamic community suggested by those very same Muslim parents.

In any event, the school district is trying to find a way to adapt the curriculum to fit the wishes of these families, rather than these families adapting to fit into the school and Canadian culture.

Mahfooz Kanwar, a member of the Muslim Canadian Congress, says he has some better ideas.

"I'd tell them, this is Canada, and in Canada, we teach music and physical education in our schools. If you don't like it, leave. If you want to live under sharia law, go back to the hellhole country you came from or go to another hellhole country that lives under sharia law," said Kanwar, who is a professor emeritus of sociology at Mount Royal University in Calgary.

Seems to me if someone wanted they could say they want their white kids segregated from the black kids because of religious reasons. At least based on the horribly flawed "logic" of the government.

pretty absurd.

go set up a private muslim school that you pay for your self. Otherwise go to a country where such strong beliefs are adhered to.

Mahfooz Kanwar basically says what needs to be said.

If you don't like what's in the Canadian school system, then don't be a part of it.

FFS. When is our government going to learn that multiculturalism isn't the same as cultural relativism?

There are some interesting comments on the Herald site with regards to the things we let radical Christians get away with and don't complain about. Or at least that doesn't make the news.

Jehovah's Witnesses have been opting out of all kinds of school activities for years and I've never really heard anyone complain about that.

Seems like a double standard because it is Muslims that want to opt out.

The schools don't realize that by allowing this, it's actually an insult to most Muslim-Canadians who want to adapt to Canadian life.

i'm a second generation person born in CGY. I recognize the fact that i get to practice religios freedom in practicing whatever my family traditions have been. By the same token, i recognize that I live in a country that was built on a christian foundation. The only way that really infringes on me is that i have my bank holiday's on the christian calender.. big deal.

As long as we understand this is my beautiful country as much as any other citizens, regardless of background, i'm perfectly fine.

Canada needs to make a bit of a stand when it comes to how 'blindly' they are willing to take on being a completely multicultural society. It might piss some people off, but that is the price that people will choose to pay (and people like my parents gladly did) to come to a place like canada.

It's Winnipeg. It's not like those folks are going to want to stay there permanently anyways.

I had segregated PE classes in grades 8-10. Was way better than wasting time with girls that don't want to be there.

That said, this is pretty ridiculous.

These people are insane.

Like someone else mentioned, can't they just take a back-seat like the Jehovahs do?

This reminds me of that ridiculous story about the arab families who wanted to allow their kids to wear the traditional sword while playing soccer!
