hmmm, it said that Italian news reported that the Pope had passed away and details were to follow.
Maybe they jumped the gun.
Sorry about that everyone

This CBC update seems to say he's alive. I think it was written 1:32 Eastern, so thats 11:32 here, so around 6 minutes ago? Sounds like CBC doesn't think he's dead yet...
I doubt it will take that long to 'write' the story, I'm sure every outlet already has the story ready to go on, they're just hovering over the 'enter' button.

The cardinals hold a conclave in which they are locked inside with no contact out until they elect a pope amonst them.

Well either way it is imminent.
He will go down as one of the greatest to ever hold the position IMO. Certainly will be anointed Saint status at some point.
Born and raised in Poland during the depression, living through communism and naziism, had many friends as a youngster than saw their fate end in Auschwitz, visited more countries than any other before him. (129 i think I heard), survived an assassination attempt, debuted the "pope mobile" etc etc...
He embraced people of all religions and, I believe, has paved the way for more understanding between people of all faiths.

CNN on TV currently has "Conflicting reports in Italian media on Pope's condition" as the headline.

His legacy will be interesting . . . . . he was obviously an influential figure as communism fell but, if I understand it right, he was also a bit of a hardliner in the Catholic Church and out of touch with the direction his American flock wanted to go as one example.
I read an article about six months ago that one of his potential successors might be a Canadian.

The election of the pope, or rather the way they announce it with the coloured smoke has to be one of the most interesting traditions of the church. Quite the process if i remember right.
