Default Update - Fee for Carriage [MRG]

Word on the street is that the Federal Court of Appeal has sided with the CRTC and networks on the fee for carriage issue. Networks can now begin negotiating rates to carry their signals with cable and satellite providers. Cable and satellite providers intend to pass along any additional cost to you - the consumer.

Recall the Save Local TV campaigns that ran a couple years ago? Well, this is just the latest chapter in that ongoing debate. See previous CP discussions on the topic here: http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=74642

Default Get ready to pay more for cable TV Canada

Telco/internet/cable costs in this country are outrageos, and will be getting worse

Currently, cable and satellite companies carry network TV programming without paying for it.

Now, private broadcasters such as CTV and Global can begin negotiations with cable and satellite companies to determine rates.

The cable and satellite companies have warned that the extra costs will be passed on to consumers

I sure as hell hope i can pick which channels i want in my package if/when this comes into play.

Fata.

Should be interesting to see how much "Value" is the broadcasters feel they have. $1/month? $50?

Ah well. I was planning to cancel my cable after the Flames season was over anyways. I wish there was a way just to get 3 channels: TSN, SN, and CBC.

If this is the case, then I think the CRTC should do away with sim-subbing and allow Canadians to choose whether they want to receive channels like Global and CTV. If they want to charge like the big boys in the U.S., then let them compete directly with the American networks. Seems fairer to the consumer.

This AND (as other posters have mentioned) allow a la carte subscription for all the other channels.

Someone told me they do this in parts of Europe...and it sounds like a great idea to me.

No one does it the US either though AFAIK.

I can understand Global and CTV wanting their piece of the pie....but if CBC gets any of it, I say all federal funding ceases pronto. No way can they in good conscience charge the public for their channels when those channels exist purely becuase of the public.

I have reached my limit for cable costs. Any additional costs will mean channels are dropped. Which would be the local channels first.

I probably wouldn't mind extra fees if it was for content I actually watched. I get upwards of 60 channels and regularly turn on 5 or 6 of them. Give me the ability to choose specific channels without bundling them in with filler...why should I be subsidizing craptastic programming?

The ONLY thing I miss about cable is Hockey Games. And even then, we usually watch them as a group at a pub or a friends place anyways.

Whatever TV shows I want to watch are generally available on Global, CTV or CityTV in HD. For everything else, torrents and a PS3 are a marvelous solution.

You can get hockey on the PS3 as well. For the months you would watch hockey, it's still cheaper than cable.

Does anyone know if your monthly fee is locked in when you sign one of those 3 year contracts on telus tv?? You wouldn't be subject to any rates increase then?

Does this have anything with Centre Ice being available on the PS3? How do blackouts work though? I'd imagine any game on SN or TSN would be blacked out here, which defeats the whole purpose for me.

Nope, you are not signing on for any rate increase protection when you sign a contract with Telus TV. It's only for the hardware rental and service.

I just got burned by this a couple months ago when they upped the individual packages from $4.50 to $7. I called them up saying I signed a contract my prices should be protected and was told that my contract was a rental agreement for the PVR and service, not the pricing of the channels. They went so far as to say they specifically tell everyone this when you sign it and never make it look like its for price protection.

Just want to add- for everybody asking about how to watch hockey games, etc without being on cable; please make sure there are no conversations that discuss illegal ways to watch games.

This is a great topic for discussion, and I'd hate to have to shut it down.

If it is something legit like signing up to a service on TSN.ca or NHL.com- that is OK.
