Default Hockey Rule Question..

so today we had a goal called off and I am just not sure if I dont understand the rule or if the ref didnt understand it ... I think the latter but here is what happened.

I take a shot and it deflects off a defenders stick into the air toward the goalie.. One of our guys is standing in front of the net and it hits him in the chest, then his glove. He swats the puck down and it hits his stick and deflects/ goes ( he might have #### it) into the net . We celebrate .. YAYAYYY ! The ref calls it off. I am not sure why so I ask him after the game. I ask after the game bc he said if anyone questions a call today , straight to the box. .

He told me this "He said it hit your player in the chest , then the glove and he threw it down. It hit off his stick and went in the goal. NO goal."
I said "so he scored and you didnt understand the rule so you called it off.

He said "no thats illegal , directing it into the net with a glove or I could have called a handpass "

I said " But he didnt direct it towards the net he directed ,by your own admission, to his stick and then into the net. Thats called a shot? "

He told me " Call Toronto!"

Obviously I know its not a hand pass bc he touched it first after it hit his glove. Am I out to lunch here or is the ref an idiot? It didnt matter bc we won , but we 3-2 so it could have mattered. Plus it would have been that guys first goal of the season... and a point for me !

If he knocks it down and shoots it in it is a good goal.

If he knocks it into the net and it happen to touch his stick on the way in I'm not sure on the rule. I think as long as it touches his stick it should count b

Oh and the ref is a jackass either way. He preemptively threatened you guys before the game that you can't speak to him about a call?

refs here are horrible but you gotta take what ya can get. I understand reffing is really hard , as I umpire. It is impossible to see everything and to get it right. I would appreciate though if they understood the rules that they were calling. I wanted to make sure I understood the rule too.

did you at least win?
As long as it was the same player who hit the puck down (without closing his hand on the puck) as it was who hit it in with his stick it should count.
Obviously it would be blown dead if
1) your player closed his hand on the puck
2) your player hit it towards another player on your teams stick and they hit it in.

He made the right call. You can't direct the puck on the net with your hand even if it does touch your stick after.

yeah we won 3-2 .. 3 wins a row for the Moondawgs. We are 1 pt away from being in the upper half of our leave. We had 4 wins last season and have 5 now. We are stoked!

it was the same guy who gloved it and he never closed his hand.

The NHL rulebooks says the following:

Quote:
Hand Pass - A player shall be permitted to stop or “bat” a puck in the
air with his open hand, or push it along the ice with his hand, and the
play shall not be stopped unless, in the opinion of the on-ice officials,
he has directed the puck to a teammate, or has allowed his team to
gain an advantage
, and subsequently possession and control of the
puck is obtained by a player of the offending team, either directly or
deflected off any player or official.
That might be the only thing that applies. And even then the ref would have to determine that he propelled it towards the net with the intent to score and it happened to hit his stick on the way in. If he knocks it down to play it with his stick and it happens to bounce in off his stick I think it should count.

This would essentially be what Puckluck said.

Obviously if he knocks it down and just shoots it in it should be a good goal.

Quote:
78.5 Disallowed Goals – Apparent goals shall be disallowed by the
Referee and the appropriate announcement made by the Public
Address Announcer for the following reasons:
(i) When the puck has been directed, batted or thrown into the net by an
attacking player other than with a stick.
I don't think this applies because it touched a stick before it went in.

You can't direct the puck on net with your glove and by reading your OP it seems that's exactly what he did. Even if it does deflect off every single player on the opposing team and goes in it doesn't count.

Also in your OP you said he swapped it down and it deflected off his stick into the net. He never shot it in the net so no goal.

He still seems like an ass of a ref though.

hey nj

every league has their own rules, so it's hard to say without your leagues rulebook to know. i know the league i'm in just added the 'shoot the puck over the glass in your own end = delay of game penalty' this season.

i'm just impressed with his comeback....

should be a goal, IMO, since it went in off of the stick.

If he directed it with his hand (in a way that could have been determined as possessive) and it DEFLECTS off his stick rather then possessed and then shot, its no goal.
