So my wife gets a ticket
For not having her registration sticker on her plate. Cop pulls her over for going 61 in a 50 zone, then tells her he won't give her a speeding ticket because they come with demerits (which would be her first).
She's been carrying the sitcker in the car for a few months, gives it to him.. and he returns with the sticker, her license and a $230 ticket.
A little steep IMO. Any ideas on how to get this reduced/erased before she goes through the process of speaking with a JP?

Rules are the rules, I understand its crap since the car is actually registered. But you're supposed to put the sticker on the day you re-register. I'd consider it lucky she didnt get the speeding ticket as well.

There is no longer any plea deals allowed in Alberta, thanks to rampant abuse of the process.
You have to go down to the court house and plead not guilty, get a court date, and then either
1) call the crown prosecutors office, set up a meeting, and come up with a plea deal
or
2) (what I do) plea it out with the crown right before the trial. then you stand u and the crown tells the judge what you've agreed to, and you do it there.

Usually, its one ticket or the other. They usually peg you for the greater offense. Multiple tickets are frowned upon.

Seems like he let her off the hook for speeding. I'd be grateful.

Actually shud be thanking the cop, avoided the demerits.
She was wrong on 2 accounts here, speeding and not having her sticker where it belongs. Suck it up and pay it.

Sucks, I hate it when things unfold that I know I had the ability to prevent. It makes it that much harder to take.
I hope you can work something out.

I understood it that he said he wouldn't give her a ticket for the speeding only. Not any tickets at all.
Could be worse OP. My friend got pulled for speeding and her insurance was expired (had the old card). Got a ticket for the insurance and the speeding.

I was told by some random girl who works at a registry that if you go down to the courthouse right away (like the day after) with this kind of ticket and be nice / complain, they will waive them. Just prove to them it was registered.
Similar thing happened to me, but I was a month or so overdue so i think you're in a better position than I was.

Really? So no more going to talk to the JP? I know up until just a little while ago you were still able to do that.

At least she got away with no demerits.
Not sure what the difference in cost is between going 10Km over the limit and a registration sticker violation, but no demerits means no potential increase in insurance

If she has no demerits on record I would have taken the speeding ticket. A 61 in a 50km zone is alot less than $230.00...
Cops ...they're all about the money.

She got caught for two different violations and the cop only ticketed her for one and you want to fight it?
I don't get it. Pay the damn ticket.

Hardly, I was pulled over for 25 over on 22x, and the cop realized my insurance pink card had expire 3 days earlier. Managed to escape with no demerits ticket for failure to produce for $90.

Yes... because he personally gets a commision for writing that ticket.
I'd take the non moving violation any day of the week, over a cheaper now, but more expensive in the long run speeding ticket. Most insurance companies give you 1 freebie, then you get surcharges on the second. I'll keep my wiggle room for the extra $100, thanks.
I really hope one day, a police officer tries to do something to really help you or a family member out, or save you from a dangerous situation. Then you can proceed to rant at him at what a corrupt slimebag he is. Unfortunately, he'd still help you, but he should just strand you, and let you fend for yourself.

Last year I was pulled over for the first time ever. I had forgotten the sticker as well, totally my fault - the sticker was still paper clipped to the documents I had in my glove compartment.
He asked me to step out of the car when it was safe and apply the sticker before starting the car again.
No ticket, pretty cordial exchange - still totally my fault though.

What about the insurance hike from a speeding ticket? Guaranteed that will end up being a lot more than $230 over the next few years.
