Default How do you type?

Just curious, because I remember throughout school, computer teachers were ANAL about the whole home-row finger placement. Even to the extent of placing cardboard over your fingers. I was always more comfortable with my own personal scattered technique and it's always worked for me. So were my old crabby teachers out to lunch the whole time like I always claimed?

I type using the method taught to me in grade 8 typing - whatever type that is.

Sucked learning it but I am happy that I can type this way - nice to not look at the keyboard - I think I can get to about 70wpm typing and prefer keyboarding over mousing as much as possible.

I type how it's comfortable for me. Teachers always gave me grief about home-row as well. I type a measured 104 WPM with 99% accuracy in numeric and alphanumeric testing. I'm really not worried about it.

I don't type home row style. My hands just float above the keyboard and I use whatever finger I feel like using, mostly the first three. Pinkies rarely ever come into play. It's worked for 20 years.

In elementary school the teachers would just cover your hands with a sheet of paper while you typed the typing test so they had no idea I wasn't actually using the home row.

I do the whole home row thing, nice to not have to look at the keyboard. My dad does the whole 1-finger typing and its painful to watch

I'm all about home row. That's just the way I learned and I stuck with it. My dad does the one-finger typing as well, but he's actually pretty quick with it, which is almost more impressive. Most of the people I know that do one-finger typing are older and never learned the home row thing and just kind of picked it up on their own.

I guess I use something close to finger poking. On my left hand, I use my pointer finger and middle finger, while I use three fingers on my rights hand. I don't think my typing is slow at all, though I have not been tested. I have long fingers, so the others just get in the way, especially on a laptop.

Edit: I am also not required to look at the keyboard while I am typing, though I do steal an occasional glance.

i guess i should have taken a typing class back in the day... never heard of 'home row' or 'default position'

i'm with hack&lube - fingers float over the keys and whatever fingers work best get used....usually index & middle, sometimes ring finger. pinky rarely gets used... the right pinky doesn't really have any feeling it after a nasty kitchen accident about 20 years ago - so it's pretty much useless anyways.

Poorly. Never used touch typing, use my two index and two thumbs in a weird hunt/peck style that is strangely efficient. I need to look at the keyboard a lot when I type.

I loved typing class in High School . . . . . before computer keyboards of course . . . . . and was a speed demon except for one peculiarity that lingers today.

I have to look down at the keyboard to type numbers. Never got the hang of that. Not sure why.
